    • An ignition control circuit (12) is responsive to a control signal (ESTC) to apply a drive signal (GD) to a power switching device (22) to conduct ignition coil current (IC) therethrough. A resistor (RS) included within the circuit (12) receives, and dissipates heat generated by, the coil current (IC). The circuit (12) includes a first transistor (QHOT) positioned adjacent to the resistor (RS) such that an operating temperature thereof is near that of the resistor (RS), and a second transistor (QREF) positioned remote from the resistor (RS) and having an operating temperature defining a reference temperature. The first and second transistors (QHOT, QREF) are configured to produce an output voltage (VOUT) proportional to a difference in operating temperatures thereof, and a latch circuit (L1) disables the control signal (ESTC) to thereby turn off the power switching device (22) when the output voltage (VOUT) difference exceeds a reference voltage (VREF).

    • A biasing circuit for an ion current measurement system draws power from a primary side of the ignition coil, and applies a positive polarity bias voltage to a low voltage side of a secondary winding of the ignition coil. The biasing circuit includes a silicon-controlled rectifier (SCR) which has an on state for carrying spark current during a spark interval of operation, and further includes an off state which prevents the stored biasing voltage on a capacitor from being shunted to ground, thereby allowing ion current sensing through the low voltage side of the secondary winding. The low on-state voltage drop of the SCR during conduction of spark current minimizes losses of spark energy.

    • A thick film resistor strain gauge is applied to a stainless steel shell portion of a spark plug. There are two preferable ways of applying a thick film resistor to the metal shell. In a first embodiment, the thick film resistor may be directly printed on to the shell portion with special screen printing equipment. In a second embodiment, the thick film resistor is printed and applied as a decal to the shell portion. The thick film resistors may be included in a quarter, a half, or a full wheatstone bridge strain gauge circuit. One of two embodiments of an automatic drift compensating circuit is used to determine the change in resistance experienced by the thick film resistors affixed to the spark plug. Either one of the automatic drift compensation circuits output a voltage signal which is proportional to the pressure changes occurring inside the engine cylinder into which the spark plug is threaded.

    • An interface device for interfacing a pencil coil to a spark plug is provided. The interface device comprises a substantially C-shaped spring adapted to mechanically and electrically engage a pencil coil shield and also adapted to make electrical contact with a spark plug ground while the spring remains mechanically and electrically engaged to the pencil coil shield. Also provided is a pencil coil shield assembly for interfacing a pencil coil to a spark plug. The pencil coil shield assembly comprises a substantially cylindrical pencil coil and a spring. The substantially cylindrical pencil coil shield is adapted to surround the pencil coil. The spring is mechanically and electrically engaged with the pencil coil shield and is adapted to make electrical contact with a spark plug ground while the spring remains mechanically and electrically engaged to the pencil coil shield. The interface device and/or pencil coil shield assembly can be configured to reduce RFI from the secondary current winding currents of a pencil coil. In addition, each can be manufactured using inexpensive and uncomplicated manufacturing and installation techniques, and using starting materials and parts that are relatively inexpensive. Also provided is a method of reducing RFI from secondary winding currents of a pencil coil by, among other things, electrically connecting the substantially cylindrical shield to a low voltage terminal of a secondary winding of the pencil coil, and electrically connecting the substantially cylindrical shield to a spark plug ground of a spark plug associated with the pencil coil.

    • Staggered firing of first and second spark plugs in a dual-plug spark ignition engine is achieved by apparatus that fires the first spark plug based on an output signal produced by an engine control module and firing the second plug based on the output of a delay control circuit responsive to the output signal produced by the engine control module. The delay control circuit additionally detects engine speed based on the firing frequency of the first spark plug, and selects a delay time so that the firing of the second spark plug is delayed with respect to the firing of the first spark plug by a calibrated angle of engine rotation.
