    • Disclosed are a personal video recorder (PVR) using metadata and a recording control method thereof that facilitates the selective recording of user-preferred segments of a broadcast program in real time. The PVR includes a broadcast receiver for receiving the digital broadcast and dividing the digital broadcast program into video data, audio data, and metadata. The PVR also includes a DS analyzer for analyzing the metadata and outputting program-related information corresponding to the digital broadcast program, a user input unit for receiving recording preference information from a user for recording the digital broadcast program, a program information processor for filtering the program-related information using the user-supplied recording preference information, a synchronous buffer for temporarily storing the video data and the audio data, a recording unit for encoding and storing the video data and the audio data temporarily stored in the synchronous buffer, and a control unit for comparing the filtered program information with the recording preference information and controlling the synchronous buffer and the recording unit in accordance with the results of a comparison.

    • A photoelectric cross-connect system for an optical-communication system minimizes service recovery time when an error is generated. A plurality of nodes are connected by an optical-transmission line wherein each nodes automatically recognizes a data rate of an input signal and communicates over a redundant channel with an adjacent node when there is a certain type of error. An optical-receiving unit receives an optical signal performs O/E conversion. A main optical-transmitting unit recovers clock and data signals according to the converted signal and sets a data rate according to the converted signal for subsequent transmission; a redundant optical-transmitting unit recovers a clock and data according to the converted signal and sets a data rate according to the converted signal for subsequent transmission A switch provides selectively connection state between the optical-receiving unit and the main optical-transmitting unit and between the optical-receiving unit and the redundant optical-transmitting unit.

    • In an MPEG-2 decoding system, a transport decoder decodes a transport packet corresponding to a Program Identification (PID) from an input transport stream, and retrieves a Program Association Table/Program Map Table PAT/PMT) from the stream when it is requested to retrieve Program Specific lnformation (PSI). A pre-decoder checks PSI stored in a PSI memory in response to a request to change to a desired channnel, reads PIDs of transport packets for a Packetized Elementary Stream (PES) of a program corresponding to the desired channel from the PSI memory to provide it to the transport decoder, receives the PAT/PMT and updates the contents of the memory using the PAT/PMT. After decoding, PSI previously extracted therefrom is stored in the memory. PIDs of transport packets for the PES of desired program are obtained referring to the stored PSI, and transport packets having the PIDs are retrieved and decoded.
