    • An instrument adapted for the determination of fluid levels within a vessel by the comparison of the density of the fluid along the length of the instrument, said instrument comprising: (i) at least one generally linear source array comprising a plurality of sources of penetrating radiation, shielding and collimation means and a source supporting structure for supporting the sources and shielding and collimation means in a linear array (ii) at least one generally linear detector array comprising a plurality of radiation detectors, supported on a detector support structure, capable of detecting radiation emitted by the sources, and (iii) means to position the source and a respective detector array such that (a) radiation emitted from each of the sources is capable of following a linear path from the source, through the vessel and material to at least a respective one of the detectors forming a part of the respective detector array, and (b) the linear axis of the source array and the linear axis of its respective detector array are substantially parallel to each other (iv) means for analyzing the detector output signals to determine the density of the medium traversed by the beams of radiation in passing from a source to a detector characterized in that the detector support structure and/or its associated electrical circuits and connectors is formed from a plurality of modular portions, each modular portion being adapted to be joined to an adjacent portion to provide a detector array of the required length.

    • A chlorinated polyolefin composition suitable for use in the manufacture of crosslinked, thermoset, flame-retardant articles such as jackets for electrical or fiber optic cables, insulating coatings or layers for electrical conductors, and heat-shrinkable tubing, sheets or other shapes for protection of cable connectors and splices. The composition is thermosetting and moisture curable and comprises a chlorinated polyolefin such as chlorinated polyethylene or chlorosulfonated polyethylene and a non-chlorinated polyolefin which contains moisture crosslinkable silane groups. The non-chlorinated polyolefin preferably comprises polyethylene or a copolymer thereof. Exposure of the composition to moisture causes the formation of intermolecular crosslinks between molecules of the non-chlorinated polyolefin. The compositions can be formed by blending the non-chlorinated polyolefin with a silanated non-chlorinated polyolefin or by silane-grafting a blend of the chlorinated polyolefin and the non-chlorinated polyolefin.

Painting of polyethylene surfaces may be assisted by precoating with an adhesion promoter comprising an aromatic hydrocarbon, a co-polymer of a C2-C6 alkene and a vinyl ester and a chlorinated polyolefin.

    • An article suitable for use as an insulating or coating material comprises a radiation-crosslinked composition comprising a polyethylene, a polypropylene and optionally an ethylene-propylene elastomer. The polyethylene component is selected from high density polyethylene (HDPE), medium density polyethylene (MDPE) and linear medium density polyethylene (LMDPE) and the polypropylene component is either a homopolymer or copolymer. The composition is predominantly based on the polyethylene component and contains the polyethylene component in an amount of at least 50 percent by weight. The article is radiation-crosslinked to a sufficient degree that it possesses thermoset properties, such that when the article is heated to a temperature above the crystalline melting point of the polypropylene homopolymer or copolymer, it is softened but does not become liquid. The article is formed by first blending the polyethylene, polypropylene and optionally the ethylene-propylene elastomer, melt processing the blend to produce an article, crosslinking the article by exposing it to radiation, and optionally heating, stretching and cooling the article to impart heat shrinkability to the article.
