    • The present application discloses a method for communicating between at least two different levels of software components. The method includes establishing a command set common to the at least two different levels of software components. Additionally, the method includes providing a command decoder operable by both of the at least two levels of software components, the command decoder configured to decode the command set. By providing a common command set between different levels of software components, such as a software driver and a BIOS, where the commands within the command table are interpreted and executed by an identical command decoder that interprets and executes the same command tables, this ensures that the same features or functions are implemented or executed in the same way across different levels of the software components. Accordingly, redundant implementation of the same functions by different software components is eliminated. Additionally, when modification of the BIOS, for example, is performed, this modification only needs to be done in one place (i.e., the command table) rather than in each software component.

    • An apparatus and method utilizes system memory as backing stores so that local graphics memory may be oversubscribed. Surfaces may be paged in and out of system memory based on the amount of usage of the surfaces. The apparatus and method also prioritizes surfaces among different tiers of local memory (e.g. frame buffer), non-local memory (e.g. page locked system memory), and system memory backing stores (e.g. pageable system memory) locations based on predefined criteria and runtime statistics relating to the surfaces. As such, local memory may be, for example, expanded without extra memory costs such as adding a frame buffer memory to allow graphics applications to effectively use more memory and run faster.

    • Embodiments of a system and method for handling interrupts are described herein. In an embodiment interrupts from various client components in a system (also referred to as clients) are processed by an interrupt handler component uniformly. The various clients signal interrupts in different manners. For example, some clients signal interrupts in a level-based manner, and some clients signal interrupts in a pulse-based manner. In an embodiment, all interrupts received by the interrupt handler are formed into an event message according to a uniform format regardless of the manner in which the interrupt is signaled. The event message includes all information necessary for a host processor interrupt service routine (ISR) to service the interrupts without reading hardware registers. Event messages are stored in an event buffer for access and handling by the host. The event buffer is managed by the interrupt handler.
