    • The invention relates to a protective device formed by a hollow body with a first end, a second end and a surface wherein at least a section of a surface is provided with a series of corrugations extending longitudinally from the first end and essentially to the second end, wherein a portion of the hollow body has a cylindrical shape and a portion has a frustoconical shape and wherein the corrugations converge towards a point on the longitudinal axis of the hollow body with their depth increasing in the direction of their convergence so that the average diameter of the body decreased in a substantially progressive manner along the longitudinal axis beginning adjacent the first end of the body, preferably wherein an annular element having an exterior diameter corresponding essentially to the exterior diameter of the first end is attached thereto and wherein the second end of the hollow body is opened with its surface folding in towards the interior of the hollow body as a lip and wherein the hollow body is provided with at least one and preferably at least two slits extending longitudinally along the surface of the hollow body wherein slits begin adjacent each of the ends of the hollow body and are aligned longitudinally with respect to each other so as to remain separated by a portion of the surface of the hollow body which is preferably located closer to one end of the hollow body than the other, and wherein the surface is also provided with an opening having a hinged strip corresponding in size to the opening which pivots into the interior of the hollow body, and wherein the corrugations have an arcuate surface.

    • Apparatus for truncating a continuously formed cellulosic tube, which is rotated and translated as it is being formed and has a free end that moves in an axial direction as the tube is formed, includes a carriage mounted for translation in said axial direction between forward and rearward positions. The apparatus includes a translatable abutment that engages the free end of the tube for movement therewith in response to engagement. The carriage is coupled to to the abutment for translating the carriage from its rearward position in response to forward movement of the tube. A cutter is mounted on the carriage for transverse movement relative to the axis of the tube; and a cam follower engaged with a cam surface is operatively connected to the cutter. The cam follower/cam surface are constructed and arranged so that, in response to forward translation of the carriage, the cutter moves transversely into cutting engagement with the tube.

    • The invention relates to a truncation apparatus and a process of truncating tubes. The truncation apparatus includes a mandrel, a means for advancing the tube to be truncated along the mandrel, at least one knife positioned in proximity to the free end of the mandrel, a slide moveably mounted on the mandrel and an exterior abutment whose distance with respect to the knife is adjustable, in addition to at least one reference system which is longitudinally adjustable adjacent the mandrel and defines predetermined and adjustable lengths between the front end of slide and the knife, and is provided with means to stop the longitudinal displacement of the slide in a manner so as to define a selected length for the last truncated portion of the tube. A method for truncating tubes wherein a length of tube is positioned on a mandrel and cut into at least a first section including one of the end edges of the tube and a last section including the other end edge of the tube.

    • Process for manufacturing a calibrated cardboard tube having minimal surface roughness and dimensional stability, involving helically winding a plurality of glued strips or plies around a mandrel and then polishing the exterior surface of the rough tube, coating the exterior surface with a thermosetting resin, cutting the tube, drying and compressing the cut pieces transversely together with applying heat, wherein at least the next-to-last ply and the last ply or strips of a dense material are impregnated with a thermosetting resin and, after coating and heat compression of the pieces, a final coating of a thermosetting resin is applied to the last plies before drying the coated surface and buffing or finish polishing to form a smooth surface, and the apparatus for performing the process.
