    • A module, included in an electrophotographic printer, for making toner images by a method in which transfer current for electrostatic transfer of toner images to receiver members is adjusted to compensate for ambient variations of toner charge-to-mass ratio (q/m). A predetermined functional relationship between transfer current and a control voltage parameter is utilized. Magnitudes of the control voltage parameter are derived from voltage measurements relating to creation of toner control patches on a photoconductive image-recording member included in a modular electrophotographic printer. Control voltage magnitude is linearly dependent on q/m. The functional relationship, which is characterized by three experimentally determined parameters, is co-optimized for providing efficient transfer of toner images and for minimizing back-transfer of toner away from a receiver member in a transfer station included in the module.

    • A method and apparatus for conditioning a moving transport web for neutralizing or modifying polar charge density and net charge density on the moving transport web included, for example, in an electrostatographic printer. The web conditioning includes a charging station which has a first stage including two open-wire AC corona chargers facing one another across the transport web, and downstream, a second stage including two gridded AC corona chargers facing one another across the transport web. The grids of the gridded AC corona chargers are preferably grounded, the AC waveforms for energizing the corona wires of the open-wire chargers and the gridded chargers are preferably quasi trapezoidal with no applied DC offsets, with preferably preselected asymmetries in the spacings from the web in the first and second stages. The first stage accomplishes at least about 80% of said neutralizing of said polar charge density.

    • A reproduction apparatus and method provides first and second toner image bearing members (TIBMs). Each of the TIBMs has a respective toner image that is moved through a respective transfer nip with a web that has or supports a toner image receiving surface. Each TIBM in each nip has a predetermined amount of pre-nip wrap by the web and a predetermined amount of post-nip wrap by the web. Electrostatic transfer, preferably in a constant current transfer mode, of a toner image at each transfer nip is made to the receiving surface so that a toner image transferred by the second TIBM is deposited on the receiving surface so as to form a composite image with the toner image transferred to the receiving surface by the first TIBM. Between the nip with the first TIBM and the nip with the second TIBM, a second surface of the web opposite the first surface is subjected to a discharge member at a fixed predetermined potential preferably ground to reduce charge on the web to condition the web for receipt by the receiving surface of a second toner image from the second TIBM.
