    • In an engine exhaust system including a DC power source, an apparatus and method for electrically heating a catalyst, the apparatus comprising a multi-phase AC alternator in electrically operable relation to the DC power source, the AC alternator rectifying the AC to DC by a diode rectifier bridge. A device for switching power supplied from the multi-phase AC alternator to the battery to the electrically heated catalyst, the relay device in electrically operable relation with the multi-phase AC alternator. An electrically heated catalyst in electrically operable relation with the switching device is also provided, the catalytic converter including a catalyst for purifying exhaust gases of the engine and a heating element for bringing the catalytic converter expediently within peak operating temperature. The invention further includes a device for energizing and de-energizing the switching device, the energizing and de-energizing device in electrically operable relation with the switching device.

    • In an engine and associated ignition energy and breakdown voltage circuit, the engine having at least one spark plug and an associated ignition coil having a primary and secondary winding, the secondary winding in communication with at least one spark plug. The ignition energy and breakdown voltage circuit comprising the ability to sense an arcing current generated by the spark plug, and also includes the ability for probing a spark plug breakdown voltage. A multiplier is provided for multiplying the spark plug arcing current by the arcing voltage and thereby producing a power signal. The ability to store the breakdown voltage of the spark plug for a period of time is provided, and further the ability to produce an energy signal in proportional representation of an amount of energy delivered to the spark plug. A method is also provided for adaptively changing spark plug energy in response to feedback from the ignition energy circuit.

    • A diagnostic method is provided for sensing whether an oxygen sensor is still suitable for use in measuring the fuel-air mixture in the exhaust gases of an internal combustion engine. The method involves turning off a heater of an oxygen sensor when the engine is turned off and allowing the sensor to cool. While the sensor cools, the sensor resistance is measured by means of a large pull-up resistor and a small pull-up resistor, with the small resistor being switched into the circuit at regular intervals for a short period of time. The use of the small pull-up resistor not only increases the reliability of the measurements, but also aids in quickly determining when the sensor resistance has increased above a threshold value indicating the sensor is cool. When the sensor is sufficiently cool, the heater is turned on and the sensor is monitored for a decrease in resistance, indicating that the heater is functioning properly.
