    • A mattress cover is disclosed for redirecting shear on a patient's skin away from the areas of the body relatively more likely to develop decubitus ulcers. The mattress cover includes an upper portion designed to cover the topside of a mattress, and at least one shear transfer zone attached to an underside of the upper portion of the mattress cover. The shear transfer zone(s) may be made of a low shear material so as to create a low friction interface between the mattress and the mattress cover to reduce shear forces exerted by the mattress. Additionally, the shear transfer zone(s) may be arranged such that a large portion of the shear forces exerted by the mattress can be redirected to areas of the body that are relatively less likely to develop decubitus ulcers.

    • A foam mattress system having transverse support ribs is provided for reduction of shear stress between a person's skin and the surface of the mattress system. The mattress system may include a mattress to be used independent of other mattresses or springs, or a mattress pad to be used atop other mattresses or springs, and either may be used on both a flat bed and a bed with an inclined torso section. The mattress system includes transverse, lateral support ribs upon the support surface of the mattress. The support ribs have a predetermined cross-sectional geometry that is curvilinear with a superior aspect generally disposed for receipt of a person and a smaller inferior aspect opposite. The inferior aspect of the cross-section of the support ribs may undercut the portion of the support ribs vertically above it. Having such cross-sectional geometry, the support ribs are thereby directionally oriented, either toward the foot or toward the head of the mattress system. The mattress system may include support ribs that are directionally oriented toward the foot of the bed in regions adapted for the person's upper torso, buttocks, and lower legs, and directionally oriented toward the head of the bed in a region adapted for the person's thighs. The mattress system may also include longitudinal cuts in the support surface, perpendicular to the transverse support ribs, thereby defining independent support cells upon the support surface.

    • An insert for a bed facilitates use of a mattress having one cross-sectional profile with a bed frame having a different cross-sectional profile. An insert includes a base extending between sidewalls which have various contoured surfaces. The contoured sidewall surfaces enable the insert to be disposed in a bed frame in association with a mattress. Inner surfaces of the sidewalls are configured to accommodate receipt of a mattress while outer surfaces of the sidewalls are configured for the insert to be disposed in a bed frame. The surface sidewalls may further be configured to provide the insert with a safety feature which prevents or reduces the likelihood of a user falling from the side of a mattress associated with the insert.

    • In a camera, a motion transmitting member has a wedge-shaped end portion inserted between a shutter release member and a shutter restraining member. Manual depression of the release member pivots the motion transmitting member, which moves the restraining member to free the camera shutter for exposure. A spring member urges the motion transmitting member to maintain its wedge-shaped end portion in mutual contact with the release and restraining members. The spring-urging automatically adjusts the position of the motion transmitting member between the release and restraining members to compensate for wear of their contacting surface portions and substantially prevents any lost motion or lag between manual depression of the release member and movement of the restraining member to enable shutter actuation. Following shutter actuation, manual movement of a film member causes an extracting member to remove the motion transmitting member from between the release and restraining members. As a result, the release member cannot effect shutter actuation during film advance, even though it is still able to be manually depressed.

    • A bladder comprising an outer and inner surface having a length, height and width, first and second ends, and an internal volume. A support structure is disposed within the bladder and has a length, width, height as well as an inner and outer region. The outer region of the support structure comprises support projections which define openings in the outer region of the support structure. The support projections have an engaging end which contacts the inner surface of the bladder and exerts force upon the inner surface of the bladder. The support projections maintain the internal volume of the bladder in a no-load sate. The openings in the support structure allow air to move freely in the bladder versus a solid support structure lacking openings. This aids in distribution of air within the bladder and provides air-like pressure management and comfort in addition to the structural support provided by foam inserts.

    • Disclosed are apparatus and methodology for controlling humidity (i.e., moisture) within and/or adjacent a coverlet associated with a multi-layer air mattress. Humidity sensors may be incorporated at selected locations within the coverlet and coupled to a controller that is configured to provide a closed-loop control signal to vary air flow rate through the coverlet to control the rate of moisture adjustment, such as removal. In part, present subject matter may include a combination of a Low-Air-Loss (LAL) topper, having a pair of humidity sensors, one of which is at an inlet to the LAL topper and the other of which is at a selected one of existing outlets of the LAL topper. Air flow through the LAL topper is kept constant, in accordance with its basic operation, while the two humidity sensors are part of a closed-loop feedback control system, which adjusts the humidity of the air being input at the inlet. Additionally portions of a closed-loop feedback control system may depend on the sensed rate of change of moisture, to facilitate more rapid response to changing moisture conditions. Separately, and not as part of the control feedback loop, a temperature sensor may be provided for simply indicating the temperature of the air relative to the LAL topper.
