    • The invention is a process for the preparation of a sulfur-containing polymer, comprising: A. contacting sulfuric acid with one or more of fatty acid, fat or oil, and an inert solvent that allows dispersion of the sulfuric acid; B. contacting the mixture from Part A with a polymer which contains olefinic and/or aromatic unsaturation and, optionally, an organic acid anhydride under conditions such that a homogeneous sulfated or sulfonated polymer is formed wherein a sulfonated polymer is prepared when organic anhydride is present; and, optionally, C. contacting the mixture from Part B with a metal salt or one or more amine compounds under conditions such that a salt or neutralized form of a sulfated or sulfonated polymer is prepared. The process of the invention allows the preparation of homogeneous sulfonated or sulfated polymers at relatively high solids levels and at elevated temperatures. The invention is also a polymer that is compatible in paving materials such that improved storage stability is imparted to the paving materials along with improved viscoelastic properties under cold and hot conditions.

The styrenic block copolymer (e.g. S-I-B-S) has four distinct and sequential blocks: a first styrenic block (S), a first diene block (e.g. isoprene or I), a second diene block that differs from the first diene block (e.g. butadiene or B) and a second styrenic block (S). The styrenic block copolymer desirably lacks any random diene block (e.g. a random isoprene/butadiene block). The styrenic block copolymer also desirably lacks any significant percentage of a triblock copolymer (S-I-B). The composition of matter may also include an extender material such as white mineral oil. The compositions may be used to make mono-layer or multi-layer cast or blown films.

    • Radial block copolymers characterized by the formulas: (1) (pS-pI).sub.n X and (2) (pS-pI-pB).sub.n X where pS is polystyrene, pI is polyisoprene, pB is butadiene, X is a residue of a multifunctional coupling agent used in the production of the radial block copolymer, and n is a number greater than 2 representative of the number of branches appended to X; hot-melt adhesive compositions constituted of said radial block copolymers, and articles of manufacture produced therefrom. These copolymers possess blocks of high average molecular weight polystyrene (10,000 to 25,000) and an overall average molecular weight (90,000 to 380,000) such that when blended in requisite proportions with a compatible tackifier resin, preferably also a secondary tackifying resin or plasticizing oil, and stabilizer, superior hot-melt adhesive compositions can be formed. The hot-melt adhesive compositions possess, inter alia, superior heat resistance, superior static time to failure with low viscosity, good peel adhesion, good tack, and high ability to bond to a polyethylene or polypropylene substrate at temperatures below that which may damage the substrate.
