    • A sensing system for sensing conditions or characteristics associated with a process or thing. The sensing system includes one or more energy converters and a sensor, which are coupled to the process or thing. A node is coupled to the sensor and the energy-converter, and the node is powered by output from the energy converter. In a more specific embodiment, the node includes a controller that implements one or more routines for selectively powering a wireless transmitter of the node based on a predetermined condition. The predetermined condition may specify that sensor output values are within a predetermined range or are below or above a predetermined threshold. Alternatively, the predetermined condition may specify that electrical energy output from the energy converter is below a predetermined threshold. A remote computer may be wirelessly connected to node and may include software and/or hardware that is adapted to process information output by the sensor and relayed to the computer via the node.

    • In one embodiment, a wireless measurement device is provided. A wireless transceiver is configured to communicate with a base station through a wireless medium to receive configuration information. The wireless transceiver outputs a signal for use in measuring a potential or current based on the configuration information. A circuit is configured to function as a galvanostat and can receive the signal and achieve a desired current using the signal. A potential of a test cell is then measurable using the current. Also, the circuit is configured to function as a potentiostat and can achieve a desired potential using the signal. The current of the test cell is then measurable using the potential. The wireless transceiver transmits the measured potential or current wirelessly to a second wireless transceiver.

    • A DRM compliance system can include one or more DRM servers, capture devices capable of continuously encrypting content at capture, and one or more rights compliance software applications. Methods of ensuring DRM compliance can include registering and verifying capture devices prior to the presentation of protectable content. Unique IDs associated with the capture devices may be stored as DRM liens in a DRM server along with particular time periods an identified DRM policy is in effect. The rights compliance software application can consult a DRM server to determine if encrypted content captured by a device is subject to a DRM policy. The server can make such a determination based on attempting to match data identifying the capture device and time of capture to one or more DRM liens. When matches are found, applicable DRM policies are applied by decrypting the content and then rendering the content in a DRM-compatible form.

    • A system for tracking copyright compliance comprises a database, the database including unique identifiers for a plurality of content capture devices. The unique identifiers may be obtained from devices prior to the presentation of protectable content, for example, by pre-registration during the process of obtaining a ticket to a performance or at a security checkpoint at an event. The unique identifiers may be associated with a copyright policy pertaining to content at the event. Each device may embed its unique identifier in content captured by the device, such as via a watermark. Software may obtain data embedded in content and access the database to determine the copyright status of the content by sending a request including data identifying the capture device. If content is obtained from an unauthorized source, the content may be traced back to a specific device.

    • A mediating server operates to interconnect a number of user devices to network servers. In order to receive customized content from the network servers, the user devices provide device profiles to the network servers via the mediating server within or in addition to requests for content. As the device profiles pass through the mediating server, the mediating server obtains the device profiles and stores the device profiles in a device profiles database. The mediating server may then classify the user devices based on the user profiles using a classification algorithm, which may include one or more classification rules for each of a number of classes. Thereafter, the mediating server may provide one or more services based on the device profiles, the classification of the user devices, or a combination thereof.

    • A generally flat carton blank is arranged for assembly into a carton shape holding multiple cigarette packs. The carton blank has a defined periphery, and a generally flat promotional sheet overlies the carton blank within the outer periphery thereof. A portion of the promotional sheet is adhesively secured to the carton blank. In another embodiment a generally flat promotional sheet overlies the carton blank essentially within the outer periphery thereof. Both carton blank each with its associated promotional sheet may then be assembled and loaded with cigarette packs utilizing standard assembly machinery and standard procedures. Fold lines on the carton blank and the promotional sheet facilitate assembly of the carton blank into a carton shape with the promotional sheet inside the assembled carton. In one embodiment, the remaining portion of the promotional sheet is folded into the form of a packaging sleeve holding multiple cigarette packs for retail distribution upon removal of the sleeve and cigarette packs from the carton. In another embodiment of the present invention, the remaining portion of the promotional sheet simply comprises a planar carton insert for ultimate use by the consumer in obtaining rebates, merchandise and the like or when the promotional sheet is simply used for printed matter.
