    • Disclosed herein is a battery module including two or more plate-shaped battery cells, as unit cells, constructed in a stacked structure in which electrode terminals of the battery cells are connected in series with each other and the electrode terminal connections are bent such that the battery cells are stacked, and a pair of high-strength cell covers for surrounding the outer surfaces of the battery cells when the cell covers are coupled with each other. The present invention has the effect of easily mounting a sensing unit that is capable of minimizing the weight and size of battery cells while effectively reinforcing the low mechanical strength of the battery cells and sensing the operation state of the battery cells to a battery module. In addition, the present invention has the effect of manufacturing the battery module by a simple assembly process without using a plurality of members for mechanical coupling and electrical connection, thereby decreasing the manufacturing costs of the battery module, and effectively preventing the battery module from being short-circuited or damaged during the manufacture or the operation of the battery module. Furthermore, the present invention has the effect of manufacturing a middle- or large-sized battery system having desired output and capacity using the battery module as a unit body.

    • Disclosed herein is a battery module including a charge and discharge stack, constituted by a plurality of secondary battery cells that can be charged and discharged or a plurality of unit modules having the secondary battery cells, mounted between an upper module case and a lower module case, wherein the lower module case is provided with joint structures including coupling parts (upper and lower coupling parts) for allowing both upward and downward couplings, and the upper module case is provided with joint holes communicating with the upper coupling parts of the joint structures. The battery module according to the present invention has the effect of reinforcing the low mechanical strength of the battery cells while the weight and size of the battery module is minimized. Also, the battery module according to the present invention is mounted to an inner frame of a vehicle or an additional frame fixed in the vehicle by a simple joint structure without using a plurality of members for a mechanical joint, whereby the manufacturing costs of the battery module are generally decreased. Furthermore, the battery module according to the present invention is safely protected when vibrations are generated from the vehicle during the driving of the vehicle. In addition, it is possible to easily manufacture a middle- or large-sized battery system having desired power and capacity using the battery module as a unit body.

    • Disclosed herein is a battery cartridge for middle- or large-sized battery packs, which has one or more unit cells mounted therein. The battery cartridge is generally constructed in a plate-shaped structure for easy stacking, and connecting members for electrical connection between cartridges are constructed in a coupling structure in which the connecting members are coupled with each other during the stacking of the cartridges. When a plurality of cartridges are stacked one on another so as to construct a middle- or large-sized battery pack, the mechanical coupling between the cartridges is accomplished, and, at the same time, the electrical connection between the cartridges is also accomplished, whereby the assembly of the cartridges is easily accomplished, and the risk of short circuits is prevented during the assembly or the use of the cartridges. Furthermore, a middle- or large-sized battery pack manufactured using the battery cartridge according to the present invention has a stable compact structure. Consequently, the middle- or large-sized battery pack is preferably used as a power source for electric vehicles or hybrid electric vehicles.

    • Disclosed herein is a battery management system for controlling the operation of a middle- or large-sized battery pack, the battery management system comprising: a battery management system printed circuit board (BMS PCB) comprising a circuit and elements for controlling the operation of the battery pack; a connector attached to one side of the BMS PCB; a housing including a housing body for receiving the BMS PCB while partially exposing the connector and a cover for covering the housing body, the cover is coupled to the housing body while the cover is disposed on the housing body; and a waterproofing member interposed between the housing body and the cover, constituting the housing, such that the waterproofing member is in tight contact with the interface between the housing body and the cover, the waterproofing member being constructed in a structure to be coupled at coupling regions of the housing body and the cover. The battery management system according to the present invention is constructed in a structure in which moisture is prevented from permeation into the housing of the battery management system in a high-temperature, high-humidity environment. Consequently, the present invention has the effect of preventing the damage to and the corrosion of the BMS PCB, and therefore, improving the reliability of the battery pack and increasing the service life of the battery pack.

    • Disclosed herein is a cooling system for vehicle battery packs, including a double filter device mounted at an air inlet part, through which air for cooling the battery pack is introduced from the outside and/or the inside of the vehicle. The double filter includes a pre-filter having relatively large air holes, the pre-filter having high frequency of replacement, and a medium filter having relatively small air holes, the medium filter having low frequency of replacement. The pre-filter is located before the medium filter in the direction in which the air is introduced. Consequently, dust is removed from air, and therefore, the cooling efficiency of the battery pack is increased. In a preferred structure, metal dust is also effectively removed by the magnetic force applied to the medium filter. Consequently, the malfunction or short circuits of the battery pack are prevented. Also, air surrounding the battery pack is directly introduced through the through-type intake ports without passing through any pipe-shaped intake duct. Consequently, generation of noise, which is a problem caused when air in the cabin is used, and backward flow of flames and toxic gas, which are generated during a fire, are prevented. Furthermore, the battery pack is constructed in a compact structure.
