    • A technique for selectively providing network access to various components is described. A modem device for realizing this technique comprises a first platform module adapted to support network access via a Radio Access Technology (RAT). The first platform module comprises a first data interface. The apparatus further comprises a second data interface adapted to be coupled to a second platform and a third data interface adapted to be coupled to an external device. A switching mechanism selectively couples the first data interface to the second data interface to provide network access, via the second platform module, to an application residing on the apparatus. The switching mechanism may further couple the first data interface to the third data interface to provide network access to the external device.

    • An apparatus such as a mobile telephone or a network card is described. In one implementation, the apparatus comprises a first functional module, a second functional module and a hub circuit. The hub circuit includes a first downstream port connectable to the first functional module, a second downstream port connectable to the second functional module and an upstream port adapted to be coupled to an external device. The hub circuit is configured to couple the upstream port with at least one of the first and second downstream port. Moreover, the hub circuit comprises a switching mechanism adapted to selectively couple the first downstream port internally within the hub circuit with the second downstream port to enable a data transfer between the first functional module and the second functional module.

    • A technique for performing layer 2 processing is described. In a method implementation of this technique, at least one first RLC SDU is created from one or more first RLC PDUs. It is assumed here that the first RLC SDU belongs to an incomplete RLC SDU set that is to comprise at least one second RLC SDU, and that the second RLC SDU is to be created from at least one second RLC PDU not yet available. In a next step, a first PDCP function is applied to the first RLC SDU to create a data packet. The RLC function is only performed after the second RLC PDU has become available (or after an RLC time-out). Then, after the RLC function has been performed, the data packet is released to a second PDCP function.

    • A technique for inter-platform communication between functional components located on different network access platforms will be described. A method aspect of this technique comprises the step of providing a first network access platform comprising a first functional component adapted to provide and/or request a platform-based function to and/or from a second functional component located on a second network access platform. On the first network access platform an inter-platform communication application is installed that is adapted to control signalling between the first functional component and the second functional component. The inter-platform communication application is enabled to contact a first middleware function provided for accessing the second functional component. Then, a communication path is established between the first functional component and the second functional via the inter-platform communication application and the first middleware function.
