    • An adjustable steering column assembly having an outer jacket, an inner jacket, and a tilt housing. A longitudinal locking device moves between released and engaged positions allowing and preventing longitudinal movement of the inner jacket relative to the outer jacket. A tilt locking device moves between released and engaged positions allowing and preventing tilting movement of the tilt housing relative to the inner jacket. A control lever is coupled to both of the longitudinal locking device and the tilt locking device for simultaneously moving the devices between the released and engaged positions. The longitudinal locking device has first and second members each having interengaging chamfers. The first member has an engagement surface abutting an abutment surface of the inner jacket when in the engaged position to prevent the longitudinal movement of the inner jacket relative to the outer jacket. The engagement and abutment surfaces are preferably uninterrupted along a longitudinal axis to provide an infinite number of adjustment positions for the inner jacket.

The brake presents an inclined surface sloping longitudinally of the jackets. A cam device of the assembly is rotatable into and out of engagement with the inclined surface. The cam device includes a lever to move the brake upwardly, to engage the lower jacket with the upper jacket, and downwardly, to disengage the jackets in different modes of operation of the assembly.

    • The invention provides a steering column for a vehicle. The steering column includes a rake bracket having first and second side walls. The steering column also includes a first steering column member disposed between the first and second side walls for raking movement. The first steering column member includes a first aperture and a plurality of projections extending inwardly from the first aperture. The steering column also includes a second steering column member received in the first aperture for telescoping movement relative to the first steering column member. The steering column also includes a lock operable in a locked configuration to concurrently urge the first and second side walls of the rake bracket together to prevent the raking movement and urge the second steering column member and the plurality of projections together to prevent the telescoping movement.
