    • An ink jet head is disclosed for use with a drop-on demand type printer, and includes an insulating base, a plurality of elongated barriers projecting upwardly from the base so as to form a plurality of slots between the barriers, a plurality of nozzle holes communicating with the slots, and electrodes formed on the side walls of the elongated barriers. Voltage can be applied to the various barriers through the electrodes in order to cause deflection of the barriers and a corresponding reduction in the cross-sectional area of selected slots, so as to force ink contained in the slots to be jetted through the nozzle holes. In order to provide a uniform ink jet intensity from the outermost slots relative to the inner slots, dummy slots can be formed outwardly of the outermost active slots by providing dummy barriers outwardly of the outermost active barriers. In addition, the nozzle holes are formed in a nozzle plate. The nozzle plate can either be mounted against the ends of the slots, or atop the base. When mounted atop the base, possible breakage of the ends of the barriers is less of a problem. Further, the plurality of barriers can either be mounted to the base by an adhesive, or can be formed integrally with the base. Also, the ink jet head can be formed with two bases, one atop the other, with the barriers of the bases being polarized in opposite directions.

    • The present invention is directed to drop-on-demand ink jet heads. An exemplary form of an ink jet head of the present invention includes a plurality of elongated members formed of piezoelectric material, the elongated members being spaced apart from one another so as to define therebetween a plurality of elongated channels, alternating ones of which are adapted to be filled with ink so as to define ink channels. Electrodes are formed in the channels on opposing sides of the elongated members. A channel closing member is mounted to the elongated members to cover portions of the channels, the channel closing member having nozzle holes formed therein in alignment with at least some of the channels. The elongated members are polarized in at least one direction. The elongated members and the electrodes constitute an ink jetting mechanism for selectively jetting ink from the nozzle holes by selectively changing volumes of the ink channels by either expansion mode or shear mode deformation of selected ones of the elongated members, upon application of a drive voltage to selected ones of the electrodes. The channels which are not adapted to contain ink are dummy channels. Such dummy channels can alternatively be provided outwardly of the group of ink channels, rather than in an alternating succession with the ink channels.

    • An organic electroluminescent body is formed by a transparent electrode formed on the front surface of an organic luminescent layer, which emits light when a voltage is applied thereto, and a metal electrode formed on the back surface of the organic luminescent layer. An organic electroluminescent device including the organic electroluminescent body is structured to include a transparent electrode formed on the back surface of a transparent substrate, and a diffusing plate having light diffusion characteristics formed on the front surface of the transparent substrate. Since the diffusing plate is formed on the front surface of the transparent substrate, part of an external incident light is reflected diffusedly by the front side of or within the diffusing plate, and the rest of the light travels through the diffusing plate when the organic electroluminescent body does not emit the light (when light is not emitted). The light traveling through the diffusing plate is reflected by the metal electrode, and enters the diffusing plate again, then it is diffused. As a result, a mirror of the metal electrode is not visually perceived from outside.

    • An electronic watch is provided with an electric power generator for generating electric energy by external energy, electric power charger for charging the electric energy generated by the electric power generator, a watch driving system comprising a watch driving circuit and a time display sub-system, operated by electric energy supplied by the electric power charger, a stored electric power detector for detecting an amount of electric energy charged in the electric power charger, and a controller. Operation of at least the time display sub-system of the watch driving system is suspended when the amount of electric energy stored as detected by the stored electric power detector falls below a preset standard value, and thereafter, operation of the suspended portion of the watch driving system is resumed upon detecting conditions for reactivation, such operation being continued at least for a period when preset conditions are met. Thus, when the electronic watch is put to use again after it is left unused for a long time, the watch driving system does not come to a stop immediately after resumption of operation of time display, ensuring stable display of time.
