    • One frame of a video signal is separated to a plurality of display frames. To display a color specified by the video signal by mixing display colors of a plurality of display frames, the video signal is converted to data indicative of a voltage to be applied to each pixel over the display frames by using a conversion table. A voltage corresponding to the converted data is applied to a birifringence control type liquid crystal display device to drive the liquid crystal display device multiple times in one frame period of the video signal. When the response speed of the liquid crystal is fast, a color obtained by mixing the display colors of a plurality of display frames is recognized by an observer. When the response speed of the liquid crystal is slow, a color corresponding to an average value of the voltages applied to a plurality of display frames is recognized by the observer. When the liquid crystal has an intermediate response speed, a color obtained by visually mixing a series of display colors displayed during the transition of the alignment state of the liquid crystal is recognized by the observer.

    • A pair of transparent substrates are arranged to oppose each other and bonded to each other through a seal member. A polymer dispersed liquid crystal layer and spacers are provided between the pair of transparent substrates. The polymer dispersed liquid crystal display device is obtained by injecting, into a cell in a vacuum state, a solution mixture of a photo-setting polymeric material and a liquid crystal material that are mixed in a formulating proportion not less than a solubility at a normal temperature and a normal pressure, increasing the temperature of the solution mixture to a temperature not less than the soluble limit temperature of the liquid crystal, and thereafter photo-setting the photo-setting polymeric material.

    • In a liquid crystal display device using color filters, the area of each of color filters arranged on the inner surface of one of substrates in correspondence with the pixel areas is set to be smaller than that of each pixel area to form non-colored light exit areas, and color pixels are displayed with non-colored light which is not transmitted through the color filters and colored light which is transmitted through the color filters. Since high-luminance color pixels are displayed with these colored light and non-colored light, the screen can be made brighter. The liquid crystal display device further includes a reflecting member for reflecting external light incident from the front side of the device and transmitted through the liquid crystal layer toward the front side. In addition, in the liquid crystal display device, reflecting films for reflecting light incident from the front side of the device toward the front side are arranged on the inner surface of the front-side substrate in correspondence with the areas between the respective pixel areas, thereby making the portions between the respective pixel areas bright and further increasing the overall brightness of the screen.

    • A liquid crystal display device includes a pair of substrates facing each, first and second electrodes formed on each inner surface of the substrates and arranged so that they are crossed and face each other, first and second aligning films covering each inner surface of the substrates and said first and second electrodes and provided with an aligning treatment in a direction respectively, and a liquid crystal member sealed between the substrates by a seal layer.     • A liquid crystal device includes a TFT or active element substrate on which TFTs and pixel electrodes are arranged in the form of a matrix, a counter substrate having a counter electrode formed thereon and arranged to oppose the active element substrate, a polymer dispersed liquid crystal layer arranged between the active element substrate and the counter substrate and having a polymer resin and a liquid crystal which are dispersed, and a fluorescent film arranged on the pixel electrode. The phosphor film converts part of supplied light into fluorescent light having a predetermined wavelength and outputs colored light. Light used for a display is increased in intensity by the fluorescent light emitted from the phosphor film, thereby displaying a bright image.

    • A polymer dispersed liquid crystal display device includes an active element substrate on which active elements and pixel electrodes are arranged in the form of a matrix, a counter substrate having a counter electrode formed on a surface, of the counter substrate, opposing the active element substrate, and a polymer dispersed liquid crystal film arranged between the active element substrate and the counter substrate and formed by dispersing a polymer resin and a cholesteric liquid crystal. The cholesteric liquid crystal is in a randomly aligned state to be twisted at a specific helical pitch in the absence of an electric field. When an electric field is applied across the pixel electrodes and the counter electrode, the cholesteric liquid crystal is aligned along the electric field, and the polymer dispersed liquid crystal film is set in a light-transmitting state, thereby setting a display in a bright state. When the application of the electric field is stopped, the cholesteric liquid crystal is restored, within a short time, to a randomly twisted/aligned state by the restoring force of the cholesteric liquid crystal, and the polymer dispersed liquid crystal film is set in a light-scattering state, thereby setting a display in a dark state. When a dichroic dye is added to the cholesteric liquid crystal, the dark display becomes dark, thereby increasing the contrast of an image.
