    • The hollow plunger of a hydraulic tensioner for an engine timing chain protrudes from a tensioner housing in an oblique downward direction. An inner sleeve fixed to the housing slidably protrudes into the interior of the plunger, and has a ball check valve at its protruding end. Oil is supplied though the sleeve and the check valve to a high pressure oil chamber formed inside the plunger, and flows outward through a two-part leakage path formed by a gap between the sleeve and the interior of the plunger and a gap between the exterior of the plunger and an interior wall of a plunger-accommodating hole in the housing. Any air that enters the tensioner accumulates in a region surrounding the upper end of the sleeve, rather than in the high oil pressure chamber inside the plunger.

    • In a hydraulic chain tensioner having a housing, a hollow plunger slidable in a plunger-accommodating hole in the housing, and a hollow sleeve extending into the plunger from a bottom of the plunger-accommodating hole, and a check valve mounted at the opposite end of the sleeve, a passage is provided on the outer surface of the sleeve to accelerate the balance of pressure between a first high pressure chamber between the check valve and the protruding end of the plunger and a second high pressure chamber between the inner end of the plunger and the bottom of the plunger-accommodating hole. In an alternative embodiment, balance is accelerated by communication between the second high pressure chamber and an oil reservoir inside the sleeve on the upstream side of the check valve.

    • The liquid crystal display device includes a pixel portion including first and second regions and light sources. The first and second regions each include a liquid crystal element whose transmissivity is controlled in accordance with a voltage of an image signal and a transistor for controlling holding of the voltage, whose off-state current is extremely low. The light sources perform first and second drivings: lights whose hues are different from each other are sequentially supplied to the first region in a first rotating order and the lights are sequentially supplied to the second region in a second rotating order which is different from the first rotating order in the first driving; and a light having a single hue is supplied consecutively to one or both of the first and second regions in the second driving. The period for holding the voltage is different between the first and second drivings.
