    • In a transfer type ink jet recording system, a scanning is conducted on a transfer drum using a recording head to form ink dot strings. The recording head is moved in one subscanning direction with a fixed pitch so that ink drops are impacted to positions which are not adjacent to ink dot strings formed immediately before the current scanning step, whereby a repellent phenomenon is prevented from occurring. According to another aspect of the invention, the printing sequence is changed in accordance with the density of print data. A dot counter counts the number of printing dots of each of a plurality of writing blocks in a video memory. A controller decides the sequence of printing the printing blocks on the basis of the result, and transfers information indicative of the sequence of the printing blocks to a memory selector. In deciding the sequence, restriction is set so that adjacent blocks are not successively subjected to the printing step. The memory selector reads out printing data from a video memory on the basis of the sequence information, and transfers the data to a recording head.

    • A memory includes a nonvolatile memory cell array, and a memory control circuit which carries out writing of data to and reading of data from the memory cell array in access units of N bits where N is an integer equal to 2 or greater. The memory cell array includes a rewritable area in which both writing of data and reading of data are permissible, and a read-only area in which writing of data is prohibited and reading of data is permissible. The rewritable area is configured so that the N bits constituting one access unit contain both actual data and an error detection code. The read-only area is divided between an actual data area in which the N bits constituting one access unit contain actual data, and an error detection code area in which the N bits constituting one access unit contain error detection codes.

    • An ink cartridge 111 holding a recording material used for printing therein has a sensor substitute module 170 to simulate operations of a cartridge having a built-in sensor. As a control circuit 222 of a printer 200 gives a sensor access instruction to the ink cartridge 111, the sensor substitute module 170 generates a specific signal and outputs the specific signal via an output module 178. The specified signal is equivalent to a signal that represents a sufficient level of remaining ink and is expected to be output from the built-in sensor of the cartridge. The ink cartridge 111 is thus applicable to both a printer designed for the use of a cartridge with a built-in sensor and a printer designed for the use of a cartridge without a built-in sensor. Namely the cartridge of the invention is compatible with the cartridge having the built-in sensor.
