    • A muzzle loading mortar constructed for mounting on a protected enclosure, for example, an armored vehicle. The mortar includes a mortar tube having an open end for receiving and discharging a projectile, and mounting means, including a tube cradle connected with a recoil-return means, are provided for mounting the tube on the enclosure. The recoil-return means includes a hydraulic member which cooperates with a spring for reducing the forces introduced into the enclosure during development of a shot from the mortar. A loading means is mounted for relative movement between the open end of the tube and the protected enclosure for muzzle loading the open end of the tube with a projectile. The loading means can be operated from within the protected enclosure to load a projectile into the mortar tube.

    • An improved velocity simulator which simulates the control movements of a large caliber gun barrel recoil and counter-recoil in a constricted chamber where there is provided a mechanism for controlling and checking the recoil and counter-recoil moving parts, in particular for controlling and checking the movements of the breech mechanism and the loading process. These movements generally have variable velocities and the control movements thereof can be interrupted randomly and without danger, which velocity simulator is adapted to be placed in operation whereby the gun barrel is adapted to be moved to its initial position by the velocity simulator against the force of a counter-recoil mechanism.The velocity simulator consists of a modular construction which connects hydraulically the driven control part and piston cylinder unit to a hydraulic power supply source whereby the control movement of a recoil and counter-recoil mechanism have an adjustable velocity, as well as a rapid operable movement. The adjusted velocities of the simulator correspond to the maximum counter recoil velocity and randomly safe interruptions of the recoil and counter-recoil movements are possible. The velocity simulator has a relatively short constructional length which is smaller than twice the stroke length so that when in an index position of the gun barrel, it can be mounted manually in a constricted space, between the bottom member and the turret rim. The velocity simulator is coupled via attachable couplings to the fluid pressure source of the large caliber gun barrel.

    • A testing and/or practice projectile assembly for preselected use in an artillery weapon in lieu of conventional live ammunition. The projectile assembly includes a casing which has an axial length which is less by a predetermined distance than that of the conventional live projectile. An insert member is operatively mounted in said casing. The length and diameter of the insert member is such that the exterior contour and total length of the projectile assembly (insert member and casing) corresponds to that of a conventional live projectile when the insert member is operatively mounted on the casing. The insert member has an annular recess and guide band segments are mounted in the recess. The guide band segments are pressed outwardly to conform to a predetermined exterior guide band diameter and can be selectively retractably released. A pull rod is coaxially connected to the insert member and band segments via a biasing cone so as to selectively release the band segments.
