    • A hand-held universal remote control enabling a user to jump directly to a desired channel and adjust sound level of a conventional remotely-controllable television receiver. A minimum number of key-buttons reduces operator confusion, particularly for elderly and physically challenged persons. A desired channel number is incrementally entered by actuation of a single key-button that advances a viewable display to any channel between 01 and 99. Once the desired channel number appears on the display a SEND button is pressed and the desired channel number change is commanded to the television receiver. A provision enabling entry of 3-digit channels between 001 and 999 is discussed. Inclusion of at least one additional key-button controls sound volume level and mute. The SEND key may also command power on/off. A complement of as few as three keybuttons may implement all of the essential features.

    • A conjoined portable display monitor and portable keyboard similar to the arrangement of a laptop style portable computer are used to provide user interface for a desktop personal computer or workstation. The portable display monitor is configured to receive video data signals from the desktop computer, while the portable keyboard and associated mouse are configured to deliver their signals to corresponding inputs of the desktop computer. The arrangement retains the space-saving advantages of a portable computer's embodiment with the enhanced performance and available options of a full-sized desktop computer. An example mode of this teaching shows a portable computer adapted to receive video signals from and deliver keyboard signals to conventional data-signal ports inherent with the desktop computer system. The user may return the portable computer's signal ports to a conventional mode and continue usage as a conventional self-contained portable computer.

    • A computer system including several nonconcurrently active hard disk drives ordinarily loaded with unique software bundles. Each active hard drive introduces an especial operating system setup and applications installation which is unconditionally denied access by activities obtained under another hard disk drive's software instructions. An absolute isolation between two or more user's application programs and data files is achieved while sharing a common set of computer system hardware and peripherals. Each category of nonconcurrent user operates independently without a threat of corruption from activities of another prior or subsequent user utilizing the same computer system for another disparate activity. In an IDE/ATA interface environment, a typical arrangement includes a setting of ROM-BIOS to only recognize a MASTER drive with a subsequent user determined swapping of MASTER and SLAVE modes between at least two hard drives utilizing a manual switch-over to obtain operation under operating system and programs uniquely installed on each of the intently selected MASTER drives, while denying access to the alternant SLAVE drive. In an SCSI interface environment, several drives set with the same SCSI-ID number are selected between by manually controlling a completion of the SCSI bus SEL line to the active intended drive and interrupting the SEL line to designated inactive drives. Virus corruption of one primary drive is fire-walled against inadvertent transfer into an alternate primary drive thereby assuring system operating integrity for one user category in spite of virus contamination, command errors, or careless or malicious hacking introduced by another user category.

    • Wireless control of an air conditioner or space heater by a portable, easily relocatable remote thermostat combined with a control signal transmitter which is placed on a table, desk or stand near an occupant of a room or office to set the operation of a cooling or heating source in order to maintain a more uniform level of air temperature comfort in the portion of the room where the thermostat is located. A wireless control receiver responsive to the transmitted control signal is included as a portion of a plug-in adapter module that plugs directly into an AC power wall receptacle. An ordinary window air conditioner or portable space heater is then merely plugged into the adapter module which provides ON and OFF control in response to the remote thermostat. A receiver is inclusible in a fixed-location wall thermostat, enabling the portable remote thermostat to maintain control of a centralized climate control system.

    • An energy conserving device which reduces excess level of alternating current power fed to RUN windings of an a.c. electric induction motor whenever the motor is less than fully loaded. A voltage dropping reactor coupled between an a.c. power source and the motor produces about 10-30% reduction in applied motor terminal voltage under reduced motor load running conditions, while a semiconductor switch acts to instantly shunt out the voltage dropping effect of the reactor and couple an increased portion, or full level of a.c. terminal voltage to the motor whenever the motor load increases. Changes in instantaneous levels of motor loading may be determined by changes in motor speed slip, determined from the motor's operating power factor, or preprogrammed. As a result of less a.c. power being applied to the motor under all but full-load conditions, a considerable reduction in eddy current and winding resistance losses is obtained which may save 20% or more in electrical energy usage in refrigerators, air conditioners, and other major appliances and as a result considerably lessen power demand from utility lines.

    • Electric power consumed by an a.c. induction motor is measured and sensed changes in power factor are used to modulate the combined magnetic flux produced in the motor field by two sets of RUN windings. A main RUN winding set, which normally couples fully with the a.c. power, is engineered to have sufficient ampere-turns to produce just enough magnetic flux to operate the motor with a light load and maintain a moderately high power factor. Motor driven load increases are determined by sensing a corresponding increase in the power factor of the main RUN winding set, whereupon power flow to a secondary RUN winding is proportionately increased. Considerable energy savings occurs when the motor drives a fluctuating load due to reduced magnetic field excitation under all but full load conditions, with the result that energy ordinarily wasted by eddy currents, copper losses, and poor power factor operation is considerably lessened. Other possible losses due to harmonic distortion of the a.c. power waveform brought about by the phase-delayed thyristor control of the second run winding power are mostly swamped out and masked by the parallel, always-on major power draw by the main run winding. A motor speed-sensitive switch or relay may divert current around the thyristor and fully excite the second run winding during motor start-up, thereby producing full available motor torque during start-up while negating any electrical stress on the control thyristor.

    • A frequency shift responsive metal detector having a sense oscillator coupled with an inducer loop. When the inducer nears a metal object, the effective inductance is changed which correspondingly shifts the natural frequency of the sense oscillator. The sense oscillator couples with a frequency shift detector. The detector produces a d.c. feedback signal which is proportional to the sense oscillator shift and acts therewith to re-establish the oscillator to it's original natural frequency by way of a voltage controlled reactance. The detector also produces a d.c. output that serves to drive an audio frequency rate voltage controlled oscillator wherein the pitch, or resultant frequency therefrom produced is proportional to the effect of the metal object on the inducer loop. A d.c. signal from the detector also serves to drive a visual indicator, such as a meter. The change in the loop inductance may be either positive or negative, resulting in a unique indication distinction between diamagnetic materials, and those which are ferromagnetic or paramagnetic. The use of a dual channel, stereo-like apparatus also provides the operator with directivity, which may be coupled with an enhancement gate signal which alternates the stereo-response back and forth between the earphones of a stereo-headset, thereby improving operator acuity.

    • Compensation is provided in the illumination of a mechanically line scanned object plane scene, where the light source is moved across the object plane to provide the light necessary for optical projection of the scene onto an image plane. This compensation gives allowance for the difference in light ray coupling effectiveness of the usual projection optics arrangement for light rays which are on axis with the component lenses, relative to the light rays which are off axis. Predetermined compensation of the illumination which nearly matches the off-axis falloff optical characteristics of the projection optics system may provide a substantially flat, uniform field illumination of the projected scene at the image plane. The instantaneous position related illumination is controlled, from a function usually stored in an electronic memory, by changing the effective electric power applied to the illuminating lamp during any predetermined frame of time.
