    • A clip unit (10) that holds an electrical contact (11) in a passageway (12) of a connector frame (13), is of small cost and small length and can be installed using a small force, and provides the functions of centering a location along the contact within the passageway and preventing rearward movement of the contact along the passageway. The unit includes front and rear ring-shaped clip elements (25, 35) that each has a slot (26, 36) that is expanded to mount the unit in a neck (18) of the contact. A contact with the unit installed is pushed forwardly along the passageway until the front clip element encounters a constriction (45) in the passageway which compresses the diameter of the front clip element until it moves forward of the constriction and then expands. Thereafter, a rear end (27) of the front element abuts the constriction while a front end of the front element abuts a collar (17) of the contact to prevent rearward movement of the contact. After installation, the rear element lies within the frame constriction and centers the neck within the constriction.

A cable connector (25) includes a socket contact (26) that can connect to the battery connector, and a locking device. The locking device has a pair of clamp arms (31) that are resiliently biased together but that are deflected apart by a separator (38) until the arm shoulders (35) snap behind the stationary shoulders.

    • An electrical connector assembly (10) includes first and second connectors (11, 12) that each has inner and outer contacts, which provides a visual and tactile indication when the two connectors have not been fully mated. The first outer contact is in the form of a helical spring (16) of electrically conductive material which is contacted by the outer second contact (41) and compressed as mating continues until a detent (74) on one connector engages a groove shoulder (116) on the other connector. If connector mating stops before the detent engages the groove shoulder, the spring will push apart the two connectors to clearly indicate that full mating has not been achieved. A front end of the spring is bent to form a prong (31) that engages the first inner contact front end (102) prior to mating but which is deflected out of contact during mating, with the opposite end of the spring forming a rear terminal (29) of the first connector.

    • A connector is mounted on a circuit board by a pair of elongated fasteners (23) that each have a connector end (29) that is fixed to the connector housing and a board mount end (28) that is fixed in mount holes (80) in the circuit board. The board mount ends of the fasteners are press fit into circuit board holes as the termination ends (42) of the connector contacts are inserted into plated holes in the board. Each fastener is attached to the connector by passing the connector end of the fastener through a hole (24) in a plate-like metal wing (74) of the connector and then press fitting the connector end of the fastener to the wing. The fastener has an elongated pin-like middle portion (26) that can be bent 90° so most of the connector can lie beyond an edge (70, 72) of the circuit board and partly in the plane of the circuit board.

    • A connector is provided with a contact that is grounded to a metal shell, which can be constructed at low cost. A grounded contact device (1A) that lies in a passage (10) of a connector housing, has a contact (20A) with a front mating end (3) and a rear terminating end (2) for connecting to a cable wire, the contact device also having a grounding element (9) in the form of a sleeve that lies around the contact and that can be inserted with the contact into the passage. The grounding element has a surrounding part (34) that closely surrounds a flange (8) on the contact, and has a rear portion with slots forming a plurality of tines (44) with a larger outside diameter than the surrounding part. When the contact device is inserted into the passage, the tines are compressed to squeeze the surrounding part of the grounding element tightly against the flange. The housing includes an insulator part (11) surrounded by a metal shell (52), the passage extending through the insulator part adjacent to its periphery (62), and with at least part of the passage having one side forming an opening (60) which is open to the shell. A portion (13) of the metal shel! lies in the opening and directly engages the grounding element of the contact device.
