    • A focus control system for a still camera includes a photoelectric amplifier and a high frequency spatial filter. The filter is arranged to scan the image region of a fixed focus lens as the taking lens of the camera is moved from an extended position toward the infinity position thereof. During a first portion of the scanning movement the filter provides an initial signal representative of the brightness of the imaging light bundles for automatic gain control. The gain of a photosensitive detector is initially set during this period. During a second portion of the scanning movement, the filter moves through the image space and continues to provide a signal for adjusting the gain of the detector. This signal has a maximum amplitude as the filter passes through the actual image. A change of slope detector senses this position and actuates a mechanical stop to freeze the position of the taking lens at that position. It is contemplated that the shutter of the camera would then be released to initiate the exposure.

    • A magnetic recording head assembly for recording input signals by selectively energizable recording heads on respective recording tracks on a recording member. The head assembly includes a plurality of recording heads with each of the recording heads having a frequency resonant structure including a magnetostrictive element accoustically coupled to a pair of pole pieces defining a recording gap and having a permanent magnet associated therewith for producing a magnetic flux through said gap. An input means including an electromagnet energized by an input signal source is arranged to apply a time varying electromagnetic field concurrently to the magnetostrictive element of each of the recording heads.

    • A lens device in an automatic focusing camera is operable to effect a first characterization of the light passing through one half of the lens device, and a second characterization of the light passing through the second half of the lens device. A sensor device includes first and second sensor arrays, each comprising a plurality of discrete light responsive elements. The sensor arrays are so arranged behind the lens device that the first sensor array receives only the light of the first characterization and the second sensor array receives only the light of the second characterization. Each light responsive element of the first sensor array has a corresponding light responsive element in the second sensor array which is vertically displaced therefrom. A signal conditioning circuit, connected to the light responsive elements of the first and second sensor arrays, responds to the differences between the signals generated by corresponding light responsive elements of the first and second sensor arrays to provide an output signal representative of the degree of similarity of the images projected upon the light responsive elements as the lens device is moved with respect to the sensor device. The output signal from the signal conditioning circuit is applied to a detector circuit. The detector circuit is connected to a control circuit which stops the movement of the lens device at the focus position.

    • A focus detecting system includes a lens device for forming an image of an object on a predetermined plane through an optical path. A semi-circular opaque masking device is arranged to rotate in the optical path to cyclically mask a portion of the optical path. A light responsive device is positioned at the predetermined plane to respond to the light from the lens device for producing electrical signals representative of the instaneous intensity distribution of the image formed at the predetermined plane. The intensity distribution of the light falling on the sensing device, is modulated by the rotating opaque semi-circular disc, and varies as a function of the condition of focus of the image. A signal processing circuit responds to the electrical signals to provide an output signal indicative of the condition of focus of the image.

    • An auto-focus camera including an objective lens device and a focal plane shutter has a first deflector device mounted on the focal plane shutter to reflect light from the objective lens device toward a second deflection device when the shutter is closed. The second deflection device, in turn, deflects radiation received thereby to form first and second auxiliary images of an object to be photographed on first and second arrays of light responsive elements, respectively. The second deflection device and the first and second arrays of light responsive elements are positioned out of the light path between the objective lens device and the focal plane shutter. As the objective lens is moved to vary the focus of the principal image to be formed on the light sensitive film of the camera, the intensity distribution of the first and second auxiliary images is also varied. The apparatus is so arranged that when the distributions of the first and second images are substantially equal, the objective lens is in a position to properly focus the principal image, of the object to be photographed, on the light sensitive film. A signal processing circuit connected between the light responsive elements and a control circuit responds to signals provided by the light responsive elements to determine when the distribution of the first and second auxiliary images are substantially equal at which time an ''''in focus'''' signal is provided to the control circuit to terminate the movement of the objective lens device. In another embodiment, the first and second arrays of light responsive elements are mounted on a nonreflective side of a reflex mirror in a single lens reflex camera.
