    • An apparatus and method for producing an enhanced resolution image from a set of lower resolution pixel image scans uses jitter and cogging errors introduced by the scanner to provide the additional information about the image that is required to produce the high resolution. One of the image scans is selected as a prototype image and is interpolated to produce an image of higher density samples (mixels). Each of the remaining pixel image scans is aligned with the interpolated prototype. The mixel values of the prototype are iteratively adjusted by minimizing an error metric representing the difference between pixel values computed from the prototype and the corresponding pixel values of each of the lower resolution pixel image scans. The method and apparatus are suitable for use in document copying system, high resolution television imaging, facsimile system, and character regeneration systems.

    • Techniques for managing media objects are provided. The techniques include providing an algorithm configured to generate an identifier (ID) based on content of a first media object. The ID is then generated for the first media object. The ID allows the first device to identify the first media object to a second device. The second device is configured to use the ID to determine if a second media object associated with the ID is accessible to the second device. Also, the determination is made notwithstanding source information for the first and second media objects or digital rights restrictions imposed on the first and second media objects, where the first media object and second media object include substantially identical content.

    • A multimedia message system automatically generates visual representations (thumbnails) of message or media objects and references (links) between media objects; nests messages within themselves; and automatically updates generated thumbnails. An object, including a thumbnail image of the object's contents and a link to the original content, is created in response to simple user inputs or commands. An image of the object is generated whether the object be a web page, a multimedia message, a hypertext link, a video clip, or a document. A link or reference to the original object from which the image was formed is also generated. The system retrieves and displays information referenced by an object and shown by the thumbnail image corresponding to the object. The system also automatically updates the thumbnail image(s) representing an object any time the underlying object or information from which the image was generated has been modified.

    • An exchange system for intangible goods comprises a first user system, a second user system, a registry system, a clearinghouse system and a hash module coupled for communication with each other. The first and second user systems includes a content module for acting as a repository for intangible goods, a pricing module for setting the price of intangible goods, a transaction generator module for creating transactions between seller and buyer, and a transaction log module for recording any transaction in which the user system participates. These systems are used to consummate transactions with other users for exchanging intangible goods. As part of each transaction, the user and the transaction must be entered or registered in the registry system. The registry system comprises an account module and a transaction log module for maintaining the anonymity of the sellers and buyers. The hash module is used by the other modules to generate unique hash codes that are used to access transactions and to validate users. The clearinghouse system includes an account module, an audit module, and a transaction log module for clearing and posting transactions once they have been verified between two users.
