    • A programmable channel scanning and acquisition method for a cable modem first performs a fast scan and then a slow scan to identify channels supporting cable modem services. The fast scan involves only a check of the cable modem AGC lock. A list of potentially operational channels is assembled and scanned. The list includes, in order of preference, the last known good channel, golden channels that are likely to support cable modem services, “learned” golden channels consisting of previous last known good channels, and other channels within the frequency plan range. The list omits channels on a “black list” known not to be operational and channels outside of the frequency range, except during registration. The method may be optimized by the setting of various parameters for operation in a DOCSIS or EuroDOCSIS environment.

    • A method and apparatus for controlling pulses in a pulse-echo level measurement or time-of-flight ranging system. The apparatus comprises a controller, a transducer, and an energy storage device. The energy storage device is operatively coupled to the transducer through a relay. The relay is enabled and disabled by the controller and in the disabled state the energy storage device is allowed to accumulate energy. The energy is stored in the energy storage at a variable voltage level. The controller includes a component for determining a voltage level corresponding to an acceptable confidence level for echo pulses. The controller includes another component for determining a voltage level an increased response time.

    • An apparatus and a system are provided to proxy one or more media signals between at least one local client device and at least one remote client device. For instance, the apparatus can include a first network interface, a media dispatcher, and a second network interface. The first network interface can be configured to receive a single media signal of the one or more media signals from a local client device via a first communication network with an asymmetric communication protocol (e.g., Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification and Digital Subscriber Line). The media dispatcher can be configured to duplicate the single media signal into a plurality of duplicate media signals. Further, the second network interface can be configured to transmit the plurality of duplicate media signals to a plurality of remote client devices over a second communication network.
