    • A throttle valve control mechanism for an internal combustion engine. In one feature of the invention, the engine has multiple cylinders extending generally horizontally, spaced vertically relative to each other. The engine also has an air induction system extending generally horizontally. The air induction system includes a plurality of air intake ducts each having a throttle valve. Each throttle valve has a throttle valve shaft extending generally vertically and linked together. A throttle valve control mechanism is provided. The throttle valve control mechanism has a throttle lever for rotating the throttle valve and the throttle lever is movable in a plane existing generally horizontally. Almost of the other part of the throttle valve control mechanism is movable in a plane existing generally vertically. If the engine is mounted on an outboard motor and encircled by a protective cowling, the other part of the throttle valve control mechanism is placed between the engine and the protective cowling. In another feature of the invention, the throttle valve control mechanism has a non-linear device so that the throttle valve opening changes non-linearly as compared with its input operation.

Plurality of air intake ducts are provided for connecting a common plenum chamber and respective air intake passages which extends to respective combustion chambers. Each of the air intake ducts has a generally straight section extending generally horizontally and parallel to each other. The distance between the straight sections is less than the distance between the axes of the cylinder bores. Also, in another feature, throttle body means are interposed between duct members, which are upstream components of the air intake ducts, and the intake passages for controlling the flow of air to the combustion chambers.

    • A cowling assembly for an outboard motor includes an improved construction that can supply relatively cool air containing little if no water to the induction device and that can also supply air to cool engine components without reducing the charging efficiency. The outboard motor has an engine that includes an air induction device and is enclosed by the cowling. The induction device has an air inlet opening. The cowling assembly defines a closed cavity in which the engine is contained and has an air intake duct that introduces air into the cavity. The intake duct adjoins the inlet opening and has an opening opened to the cavity and positioned lower than a lower end of the inlet opening. In one form, the cowling assembly has at least one front air intake opening formed on a side surface of its front portion. A rear air intake opening is also formed on a rear surface of its rear end portion. The cowling front air opening primarily supplies air to the induction system, while the cowling rear air opening primarily supplies a cooling air flow across the engine.

    • A direct fuel injector is positioned to provide better fuel atomization within the combustion chamber. The direct fuel injector is disposed between an intake manifold and a cylinder head assembly thereby eliminating the need for additional fuel delivery conduits, thus decreasing the size of the engine and lowering the production costs of the outboard motor. The direct fuel injector position permits immediate air/fuel mixture adjustments allowing improved acceleration enrichment and lean stratified charge operation. The direct fuel injector position and routing of induction system components allows for compact placement of auxiliary components.     • A blow-by gas ventilation system for a crankcase of an engine includes an improved construction for distributing blow-by gases more evenly between multiple cylinders. The engine has an air intake device that includes a plurality of air delivery conduits for the cylinders and a plenum chamber housing disposed upstream of the air delivery conduits. The ventilation system comprises a blow-by gas conduit that couples the crankcase with the plenum chamber housing. The plenum chamber housing includes an opening to which the blow-by gas conduit is connected. A baffle is disposed in front of the opening within the plenum chamber housing so as to divide the blow-by gases equally for the respective cylinders.
