    • A method for removing soot from an engine oil, the method comprising: disposing an oil containing soot particles between a pair of electrodes; applying a DC or AC current to the pair of electrodes for a period of time to generate an electric field, wherein the electric field causes a portion of the soot particles to agglomerate on a positive electrode of the pair of electrodes and other portions of the soot particles not collected on the positive electrode are also agglomerated by the electric field resulting in a larger average particle size; and applying a filtering process to remove the soot particles not collected on the positive electrode. Also disclosed herein is a filter for removing soot particles from an engine oil having soot particles disposed therein, the filter comprising: a housing having an inlet and an outlet defining a flow path through a chamber defined by the housing; a pair of electrodes disposed in the flow path, the electrodes being disposed in the flow path, the pair of electrodes being electrically coupled to a DC or AC current, wherein an electric filed is generated by the pair of electrodes and one of the pair of electrodes is a positive electrode, wherein the electric field causes a portion of the soot particles to agglomerate on the positive electrode.

    • An oil filter for rejuvenating lubricating oil to prevent premature wear by ensuring that impurities will not circulate through the engine has a housing, a mechanically active filter element, and a chemically active filter element. A flow path defined by the housing is configured to pass the fluid entering the housing through housing inlets first through the chemically active filter element, then through a channel defined within the flow path of the housing at least partially disposed in a space separating the chemically active filter element and the mechanically active filter element, then through the mechanically active filter element, and finally to the housing outlets through which decontaminated and purified oil passes to the engine. In one exemplary embodiment of the present invention, substantially all of the fluid flowing through the housing passes through the chemically active filter element.

    • A method for dispersing an additive from an additive cartridge disposed in a housing of an oil filter is provided herein, the method includes using stagnation pressure to disperse the additive from the additive cartridge; and regulating a flow rate of the additive from the additive cartridge by restricting an inlet opening of an outlet tube of the additive cartridge. Also provide herein is an additive cartridge for dispersing an additive within a filter housing, the additive cartridge having a housing defining a receiving area for receipt of the additive; a fluid inlet path through a wall of the housing, the fluid inlet path providing a means for increasing a pressure within the receiving area, the fluid inlet path having an inlet opening disposed adjacent to an outer wall portion of the housing; and a fluid outlet path through the wall of the housing, the fluid outlet path providing a means for dispersing the additive from the receiving area when the pressure within the receiving area exceeds a predetermined value, the fluid outlet path having an outlet opening disposed adjacent to the outer wall portion of the housing, the outlet opening being covered by a shroud configured to deflect fluid flowing in a first direction away from the outlet opening and the inlet opening of the fluid inlet path is positioned to receive fluid flowing in the first direction; and fluid flow of the additive through the fluid outlet path is controlled by varying an inlet opening of the fluid outlet path.
