    • Providing an audio broadcast for a TDMA system. During a single time slot, an audio message is broadcast from a base art and received at a number of portable arts. An audio broadcast command is generated by designating the single time slot and then transmitted to the plurality of portable parts. An additional portable part transmits a broadcast origination signal and the audio message to the base part which transmits the audio broadcast command to the portable parts. by assigning a time slot other than the designated time slot to a portable part, the portable part does not broadcast audio messages during the designated time slot. More than three receiving time slots and more than three sending time slots are divided out for the base art that includes the designated time slot. The audio broadcast command is transmitted during at least two of the more than three sending time slots.

    • A cordless digital telephone system which allows hierarchical call control in a cordless phone system is provided. Based upon a priority level associated with the identified phone number, a call controller unit directs the call to a selected one of a plurality of mobile units in communication with the base station, or a group of mobile units, or in some cases, at a highest priority level, broadcasts the call to all mobile units. In those cases where the phone number is not identifiable as being associated with a particular priority, then a lowest priority is set for that call in which case a predefined message is sent to the caller and the call is dropped. In this way, since in a broadcast mode a user does not have the chance to prevent a ring an unwanted call can be diverted based upon a priority level such as, for example, a “Do not disturb” priority level for calls and broadcasts.

    • A broadband gateway that communicates with a broadband computer network and narrow band cordless devices is provided. The gateway houses together a connector to a broadband network, which is connected to a broadband modem. The broadband modem provides a broadband computer network outlet. The broadband modem is also connected to a narrow band cordless device. The narrow band cordless device may be formed by a translation board connected to the broadband modem, a microprocessor connected to the translation board, a burst mode controller connected to the microprocessor and the translation board, and a transceiver electrically connected to the burst mode controller. A codec device may also be connected to the burst mode controller to allow the use of a conventional telephone.

    • A cordless digital telephone system which allows broadcast over broadcast is provided. Time division multiple access (TDMA) cordless phone systems provide a base unit which is able to provide connections for a plurality of mobile units, such as handsets. With time division, the mobile units are synchronized to different time slots. A broadcast mode is provided that causes the mobile units to be placed in a receive only mode and to synchronize to the same time slot where a broadcast message is sent. In this way, a cordless telephone base unit in a broadcast mode receives a radio or streaming audio signal. A call controller unit included in or coupled to the base station then sends the received radio or streaming audio signal to at least one mobile unit in communication with the base station. In those cases where a mobile unit is receiving the broadcast and a conventional phone call is received at the base station, then a determination is made whether or not to send the conventional call to the mobile unit is made. In those cases where the conventional call is to be forwarded, then the base station is set to standard mode and the conventional call is forwarded to the mobile unit whereas any other mobile unit in communication with the base station still receive the broadcast.
