摘要： A duplicated transmission system in which two optical wavelengths are utilized on each of a pair of optical links with one optical wavelength communicating data and the other optical wavelength communicating a signal designating an active optical link of the pair. Each of the optical links is terminated on a transmit unit and a receive unit. The two transmit units determine which of the optical links is the active optical link, and each of the transmit units then transmits a signal on the second wavelength of the terminated optical link indicating this decision. The second wavelength of the active optical link designates that it is active, and the second wavelength of the standby optical link designates that it is the standby optical link. Upon reception of the information on the second wavelengths, the receive units both select the active optical link.

摘要： An arrangement for cooling an electronic assembly includes a circuit board, an enclosure member and at least one electromechanical actuator. The circuit board has a first surface, a second surface, and at least a first heat-generating element secured to the first surface. The circuit board further comprises at least one aperture extending between the first surface and the second surface. The enclosure member is secured to the circuit board so as to form a fluid tight barrier of a compartment defined at least in part by the enclosure member. The compartment includes a first subcompartment defined at least in part by the first surface and the enclosure member and a second subcompartment defined at least in part by the second surface and the enclosure member. The at least one electromechanical actuator is secured within the fluid type barrier and is operable to generate a flow movement in the direction of the at least one aperture when liquid is disposed in the fluid tight barrier.

摘要： A cellular terminal for transmitting information defining its location upon placing a 911 call. The cellular terminal includes a global satellite positioning (GPS) device; and upon the user of the cellular terminal placing an emergency telephone call, the cellular terminal interrogates the GPS device to obtain the geo-coordinates. The cellular terminal then transmits the geo-coordinates to a cellular telecommunication switching system. The cellular switching system or a public safety answering point (PSAP) system responding to the 911 call converts the geo-coordinates into location information. In addition, the cellular terminal transmits to the cellular telecommunication switching system pre-defined vehicle description information if the cellular terminal is being utilized within a vehicle. If the cellular terminal is a hand held unit, the cellular terminal can be programmed to transmit personal characteristics of the person using the cellular terminal. In another embodiment, the cellular terminal obtains the geo-coordinates from the GPS device and converts the geo-coordinates to location information using information stored internal to the cellular terminal. The location information is transmitted to the PSAP via the cellular switching system rather than the geo-coordinates.

The outer diameter of a silica optical fiber varies only by approximately .+-.1 micron and the outer surface of a silica optical fiber has an optical finish. Thus by using optical fiber to fabricate molds, molds can be produced which have the required accuracy and finish for the production of optical components. The outer coating of the optical fibers used to fabricate the mold is only removed within and in close proximity to a combination region in a splitter/combiner resulting in the capability to pigtail optical fibers attached to a splitter/combiner molded from the resulting mold.

摘要： A molded polymeric resin-filled coupler comprising two low-refractive index plastic molded subassemblies. One subassembly has an optically finished mixing region, with a channel that has a V shaped lower portion. The mixing region subassembly is covered with a lid subassembly of the same material as the mixing region subassembly. During assembly, optical fibers are inserted into the mixing region subassembly which is then filled with a high index material to form a high-refractive index waveguide core region in the channel. The molded low-refractive index subassemblies provide a waveguide cladding around the high-refractive index waveguide core. Low cost is attained by utilizing optically finished metal molds to produce the subassemblies resulting in an optically finished mixing region and lid subassemblies without the need to polish each subassembly.

摘要： An optical coupler having an optical core in which a small concentration of refractive microparticles has been added to a suspension material of the optical core. The result is that light from an optical source is bent slightly by the refractive effects of the microparticles and is coupled into the higher order of modes over a relatively short distance within the optical core. These microparticles are closely matched to the index of refraction of the suspension material resulting in smaller deflection angles and fewer reflections. In addition, these microparticles match the specific gravity of the suspension material such that they do not settle out of a suspension while the optical core material is being hardened from a semi-liquid state.

摘要： Finishing an end of a plastic optical fiber by ablating the end of the plastic optical fiber by utilizing an Excimer laser so that the end of the optical fiber can be used in a optical connector. A high powered ultraviolet beam of light from the laser is absorbed by the end of the fiber and ablates the first few microns of the end face of the fiber. This process removes residual cracks and fissures to flatten the end of the fiber for use in the optical connector. The optical fiber is then ready to make a low loss interface with a source, a detector, or another optical fiber.
