    • A pulsation damper is disclosed for use in a standard air-conditioning compressor for an automobile. The pulsation damper consists of a body portion and a cap portion and the cap portion has an outer diameter that is dimensioned to be press fit within the outlet opening of the housing of the air compressor. Thus, the pulsation damper can be retro-fit in a standard air compressor housing and will not increase the overall size of the housing or require modification in the connecting tubing. The body of the pulsation damper consists of longitudinal groove-like passages which direct the fluid flow from one of two internal compressor discharge lines to a point where it opposes and is intermixed with the fluid flow from another internal discharge line. This opposition and intermixing of the two fluid flow paths, which have pressure pulses which are out of synchronism with each other, tends to cancel or reduce such pulses. The fluid flow extends through a central passage formed in the body portion of the pulsation damper and then exits through a series of circumferentially spaced outlet ports formed in the cap.

    • An automatic steering wheel pivoting mechanism includes a unique mount structure such that two engaged mechanical elements which pivot the steering wheel are both mounted in a cantilever-like fashion at one lateral side. This decreases the lateral size required for the pivoting mechanism. The mechanical elements are mounted in boss members extending outwardly of a steering column and a wheel column such that they are securely connected to the respective columns. In a further feature of the present invention, a motor for the mechanical members monitors the resistance to further pivoting of the steering wheel, and shuts the motor off should that force exceed a predetermined maximum.

    • A signal generating mechanism for producing a pulsed DC electrical voltage signal having a frequency proportional to the angular velocity of a rotating shaft. The signal generating mechanism may be used in the distributor of a breakerless ignition system for a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine, in which case the frequency of the pulsating voltage signal is equal to the rate at which ignition sparks are to be generated. The signal generating mechanism includes a baseplate and a bushing through which the rotating shaft passes. A stator assembly is formed by a hub and lower and upper plates affixed thereto, the stator assembly being rotatable about the bushing and further including at least one Hall effect sensor and integrated circuit mounted in a nonmagnetic supporting structure secured to the upper plate. A permanent magnet also is attached to the supporting structure and is radially spaced from the Hall effect sensor and integrated circuit. A rotor assembly is attached to the shaft and has depending vanes extending into the space between the permanent magnet and the Hall effect sensor and integrated circuit. The number of vanes corresponds to the number of cylinders in the internal combustion engine, and the vanes come into and go out of alignment with the permanent magnet and the Hall effect sensor and integrated circuit. This produces a switching action in the integrated circuit through the action of the Hall effect sensor and results in the aforementioned DC pulsating voltage signal.
