Water paints.-An adhesive comprises a mixture of aqueous dispersions of india-rubber, such as latex, and of a resinous agent rendering the rubber tacky, such as the polymerization products of the higher fractions of coal tar. The resin is emulsified in water with the aid of small quantities of animal, vegetable, or mineral oil, sulphonated oil, or soap. Additional thickening or stabilizing agents such as tragacanth, Arabic, Senegal, karaya, and Agar gums, Iceland or Irish moss, casein, saponin, and sodium silicate may be added. Fillers, vulcanizing agents, and preservatives (e.g. sodium fluoride, sodium benzoate, and phenol) may also be incorporated in the mixture. To increase the penetrating power of the composition substances miscible with water and oil, for instance orthotoluidine, sodium sulphanilate, thiourea, and sodium salicylate, may be added. The preferred resinous agent is a mixture of coumarone and indene polymer know as Cumar resin. Atypical composition consists of 2-5 parts of Earaya gum, 25 parts of Cumar resin, 17 parts of spindle oil, and 100 parts of rubber as latex containing 33 per cent solids.'
