    • A method for network analysis in an access network (1) in connection with a data transmission network, in particular an xDSL network, with a plurality of subscriber lines (4.1-4.3). The method comprising the step of collecting data on physical layer operational parameters ({φoi}) of at least one subscriber line (4.1-4.3) and the steps of simulating a behavior of higher network layers based on said collected data when deploying at least one application (6.1-6.3) on said subscriber line (4.1-4.3); generating data on higher layer performance parameters for said application (6.1-6.3); and generating an advice signal (AS) based on said data and indicative of the compatibility of the physical layer/application couple with predetermined Quality-of-Service (QoS) requirements for said application (6.1-6.3). Thus, the proposed method provides network operators with information concerning the question if a given service application (6.1-6.3) will run on a respective data transmission (core and access) network (1, 1′) in accordance with the QoS values recommended for said application (6.1-6.3), in particular a high-bandwidth rich media service type application, e.g. a triple-play service.

    • The present invention relates to a wired transmission line testing method for determining at least one physical characteristic of a wired transmission line where the wired transmission line is coupled between a first line transceiver device and a second transceiver device. The wired transmission line testing method first comprises the steps of a first transceiver sending a first known excitation signal over the wired transmission line and subsequently the step of the first transceiver and the second transceiver both generating a first representation of a received signal respectively including reflected or forwarded portions of the known excitation signal and third a processing part deriving at least one physical characteristic of the wired transmission line based on the first representations generated by the first transceiver and the second transceiver. Furthermore, the wired transmission line testing method may comprise the additional steps of the second transceiver sending a second known excitation signal, then first transceiver and second transceiver both generating a second representation of a received signal respectively including forwarded or reflected portions of the second known excitation signal and the processing part deriving the at least one physical characteristic of the wired transmission line based on the first and second representations generated by the first transceiver and the second transceiver.

    • The present invention relates to a method for localizing a defect in a in-house access plant operable to carry broadband communication services. A method according to the invention further comprises the steps of: instructing a user of said in-house access plant to manipulate in-house equipment through an automated and interactive communication session, determining timing information for each manipulation that is carried out, performing remote quality measurements over said in-house access plant while said in-house equipment are being manipulated, identifying from said timing information a particular manipulation that is time-correlated with a substantial change in measured quality, thereby identifying a particular piece of in-house equipment that has been manipulated and in the neighborhood of which said defect is located. The present invention also relates to an analysis tool such as a network analyzer, a communication unit such an intelligent voice responder or a web server, and to a diagnostic system.
