    • 572,294. Filters. FRASER, L. B., and FRASER, D. C. March 21, 1944, No. 5271. Convention date, Jan. 13, 1943. [Class 46] A filter is provided with a travelling cleaner adapted to move over a filter bed and to raise periodically portions of the filter material, the raising means being adapted to move from a lower position where it holds part of the filter material to higher position where the material is caused to drop back to the filter bed. In the construction shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the filter is of circular form and comprises a settling tank 1, surrounded by a filtering channel 2 which is separated from an effluent channel 5 by a wall 6. The cleaner 11 is attached to a motor-driven carriage 8 which is pivoted at the centre of the settling tank and supported on wheels 10. The cleaner is provided with three chambers 39, 45, 49, the chamber 39 containing a number of electro-magnets 59, 59' which when not in use rest on the filter bed of magnetite 21. The magnets are .connected by links and levers to a shaft 76 adapted to be driven by a motor 78, so that the magnets are raised and lowered, switch means being provided so that the magnets are energized to raise a portion of the magnetite, and when they are in the upper portion are de-energized so that the magnetite drops back on the filter bed. Arms 62 are provided so that the magnets in their movement upwards also move backwards whereby the raised portion of the magnetite when it drops falls back into the space from which it was raised. The chambers 45, 49 are provided, respectively, with flat plates 48, 48 which form seals with the upper surface of the filter bed. In operation liquid to be filtered passes from the settling tank 1 through recesses 16 to the filter bed. As the filter clogs the level of liquid in the tank rises until eventually a float switch is -operated to energize motors 32, 78 whereby the carriage 8 commences to revolve and portions of the filter bed are in'turn raised and lowered. Filtered liquid flows up through the bed into chamber 39 and carries the dirt away to chamber 49, from whence the wash water is delivered by a pump 55 back to the tank 1. A switch 108 and a stop 109 ensure that the cleaner stops after making one revolution; unless the filter is still clogged sufficiently to keep the float switch closed. When the filter bed is of non- magnetic material portions of the filter bed may be raised and lowered by the aid of a partial vacuum. A driver 59 b Fig. 8, formed with a concave surface is connected with a tube 116 provided with a check valve 117. When the device moves downwardly the edge is forced into the filter bed, and on the upward movement part of the bed is raised, which is returned on the opening of the check valve. If the vacuum is insufficient tube 116 may be connected to a source of vacuum. Electric means May be pro- 'vided for producing or destroying the vacuum. Specification 514,982 is referred to.
