    • In a setting gun utilizing an explosive charge for driving fastening elements into a target material, a drum magazine holding both fastening elements and cartridges in receiving bores is rotatably mounted in a housing between a barrel and a breech plug. Separate spring biasing mechanisms hold the barrel and the drum magazine in a non-firing position. In moving the barrel and the drum magazine into the firing position it is necessary to overcome the spring biasing action and to displace both members opposite to the spring biasing direction.

    • In an apparatus for driving fastening elements, such as bolts and nails, into receiving material, a first or driving piston is mounted in a first chamber through which it is axially displaceable. A pressure converter arrangement is connected to an inlet to the first chamber for supplying the compressed air required for displacing the first piston for driving in a fastening element. The pressure converter includes a storage chamber, a second chamber in communication with the storage chamber and a third chamber. A double headed piston has one head in the second chamber and the other head in the third chamber. The third chamber has a much greater transverse cross-sectional area than the second chamber. Compressed air supplied to the third chamber compresses air in the second chamber which is directed into the storage chamber. From the storage chamber, the compressed air is charged into the first chamber for driving the first piston forwardly for inserting the fastening element.

    • In a setting device, a magazine is advanced through a guide channel to present fastening elements in the path of a driving member. The magazine is moved in a step-wise manner by a transport pawl, and the pawl, in turn, is reciprocated relative to the drive channel by an operating member. A linkage interconnecting the operating member and the transport pawl, includes a pin secured to the operating member extending into a triangularly shaped recess in the transport pawl. The pin pivots the transport pawl out of engagement with the magazine in the guide channel and moves the pawl rearwardly so that it can again engage the magazine and move it so that another fastening element is aligned with the driving member.

    • In an explosive charge driven setting gun a breech block is located in the rear of the gun housing and the gun barrel is axially displaceable within the gun housing. A firing projection is formed on the rear end of the barrel so that a propellant charge supported on the breech block can be fired by displacing the barrel rearwardly against the breech block. The displacement force can be provided by a spring which biases the barrel rearwardly. A latch can be mounted in the housing for securing the barrel in a forward position and when the latch is released, the barrel can be displaced rearwardly against the breech block.

    • In a strip for holding fastening elements, such as nails and the like, as they are fed into a setting device for insertion into a target material, break-off locations are provided in the strip to separate used portions of the strip from portions still containing fastening elements. The holder strip is an elongated flat tape or belt-like member. The fastening elements are secured within holes spaced apart in the elongated direction of the strip. The fastening elements have transversely extending heads which punch out parts of the strip as the elements are driven into the target material. Preferably, the break-off locations are in the form of notches extending inwardly from the longitudinal sides of the strip into the region punched out by the inserted elements. As a result, when a fastening element punches through the strip where break-off locations are present, at least a portion of the strip from which the fastening elements have been driven is separated from the remainder of the strip.
