The navigation system includes a first memory unit that stores a basic navigation database including road map information, and a receiver that receives supplemental navigation data including digital road maps, and provides received supplemental navigation data that is stored in a second memory unit. A navigation computer computes driving directions between the starting position and the destination position using information from the basic navigation database and the received supplemental navigation data, and outputs driving directions for presentation to a user.

    • A telephone system for a motor vehicle includes a transmit/receive unit that transmits data over a wireless communication channel, and receives data over the wireless communication channel and provides a received signal. The system also includes a control unit that communicates with the transmit/receive unit; a first memory device; and a computing device. The computing device receives the received signal and automatically stores the received signal data in the first memory device when the telephone system is configured in a stand-by mode, which allows incoming data to be stored in the memory device while selectively preventing the transmission of outgoing calls originated by the control unit to the transmit/receive unit. Data can be sent to the motor vehicle telephone system and can be stored there for retrieval by the operator when he returns to the vehicle. The data may include audio and/or video data.

    • A system for use in a motor vehicle includes a wireless receiver that receives, over a wireless communication channel, supplemental information representative of the characteristics of the contents of a playback media, and provides received supplemental information indicative thereof. A playback device receives the received supplemental information and stores the received supplemental information in a non-volatile memory device. The playback unit may generate a request for supplement information in response to and indicative of a playback media inserted into the playback unit. The system may also include a wireless transmitter that receives the request and transmits the received request over the communication channel. In one embodiment, after the data medium has been inserted into the playback unit, the wireless transmitter (e.g., a car telephone) establishes a radio connection to a data server, and at least part of the characteristic data stored on the inserted data medium are read by the playback unit and are transmitted from the wireless transmitter to the data server, which compares these characteristic data with stored data to identify the data medium. After identifying the data medium, the data server transmits supplemental information to the playback unit, which stores the information in a memory device for on-demand retrieval and display. In another embodiment, a radio connection is established between a computing device and the wireless receiver. The computing device transmits characteristic data of selected data media over the radio connection to the wireless receiver, which provides the received data to the playback unit that stores the received data in a memory device for subsequent on-demand retrieval and display. In this embodiment, an operator can transfer to the motor vehicle the characteristic data stored in the computing device (e.g., personal computer) relating to selected data media.

    • A wireless communication system allows mobile users to access a resource from a content server. The wireless communication system includes a browser that allows mobile users to access resources through a wireless application protocol (WAP) compliant server. The (WAP) compliant server connects the browser to a content server. This connection allows resources to be passed between the browser and the (WAP) compliant server. The browser is further configured to transmit a request that includes an address for a resource, a protocol to be used, and one or more textual parameters encoded into a binary data packet. The wireless communication method includes generating a request for a resource; translating a textual portion of that request into binary data at the browser; transmitting the request to a wireless gateway; and converting the request into a format that is compatible with a protocol used by a receiving network.

    • A system for use in a motor vehicle includes a wireless receiver that receives, over a wireless communication channel, supplemental information representative of the characteristics of the contents of a playback media, and provides received supplemental information indicative thereof. In another embodiment, a radio connection is established between a computing device and the wireless receiver. The computing device transmits characteristic data of selected data media over the radio connection to the wireless receiver, which provides the received data to the playback unit that stores the received data in a memory device for subsequent on-demand retrieval and display. In this embodiment, an operator can transfer to the motor vehicle the characteristic data stored in the computing device (e.g., personal computer) relating to selected data media.
