    • A manual spray cleaner for removing dirt and stains from fabrics and carpets comprising a spray bottle having two separate chambers and a single dispensing spray outlet for dispensing controlled amounts of liquids from each of the chambers. One of the chambers has a fabric/carpet cleaning composition therein and the other chamber has an oxidizing composition that enhances the cleanability of the fabric/carpet cleaning composition. The fabric/carpet cleaning composition and the oxidizing composition are simultaneously drawn from their respective chambers and mixed together at the time that they are dispensed from the spray bottle. At least one of the oxidizing composition and the fabric/carpet cleaning composition includes a fabric/carpet protectant. The two compositions are mixed before or after they are sprayed from the bottle. The two compositions can be pressurized with an aerosol propellant or drawn from their respective chambers by a mechanical pump.

    • Compositions and methods for killing dust mites are disclosed. The disclosed miticides are aqueous mixtures composed of benzyl benzoate in an amount effective for killing dust mites and a solvent having a high affinity for benzyl benzoate and for water. The amount of solvent is sufficient to maintain a stable dispersion of benzyl benzoate in the aqueous mixture. Benzyl alcohol, which is itself a miticide, is an especially useful solvent. The miticide optionally contains at least one surfactant, which along with the solvent, helps maintain a stable dispersion of benzyl benzoate in the aqueous mixture. The aqueous mixture is applied to surfaces of household furnishings including bedding, carpeting, and upholstery, using conventional liquid application techniques. An important aspect of the present invention is that the miticide is a fully aqueous solution that, unlike available miticides, contains no solid particles for dispersing the benzyl benzoate.

    • Compositions and methods for killing dust mites and cleaning carpets and other textile fabrics are disclosed. A miticide composition concentrate for mixing with water and optionally with a carpet or fabric cleaning solution consists essentially of a solution of benzyl benzoate and a water soluble organic solvent for the benzyl benzoate such as benzyl alcohol, a surfactant and water. The amounts of the solvent, surfactant and water are selected to maintain a stable dispersion of benzyl benzoate and benzyl alcohol in the aqueous mixture. Also disclosed are aqueous carpet cleaning miticide composition comprising benzyl benzoate, at least one organic solvent which has an affinity for benzyl benzoate and water, at least one surfactant, an anti-resoiling agent, optionally, a fragrance, optionally, a chellating agent and water. The amounts of the at least one organic solvent, surfactant and water are selected to solubilize the benzyl benzoate in the aqueous mixture and maintain a stable dispersion of benzyl benzoate and solvent in the aqueous mixture. Further, the at least one organic solvent and the at least one surfactant are selected to clean dirt and grease from a carpet surface or textile fabrics. The aqueous mixture is applied to surfaces of household furnishings including bedding, carpeting, and upholstery, using conventional liquid application techniques.

    • A portable surface cleaning apparatus comprises a base module for movement along the surface; an upright handle pivotally attached to the base module; a fluid dispensing system including at least one fluid supply tank mounted to the handle or the base module, a dispensing nozzle mounted to the base module for applying a cleaning fluid to an upholstery or carpet surface to be cleaned, and a heater for heating the fluid to be applied to the surface to be cleaned to a temperature less than boiling; a fluid recovery tank mounted to the handle or the base module for holding recovered fluid; a suction nozzle associated with the base module; a working air conduit extending between the recovery tank and the suction nozzle; and a vacuum source and fluid communication with the recovery tank for generating a flow of working air from the suction nozzle through the working air conduit and through the recovery tank to thereby recovering fluid from the surface to be cleaned through the suction nozzle and working air conduit and into the recovery tank. A method for cleaning an upholstery or carpet surface in which a fluid cleaning solution is contained in a tank and dispensed on the surface through a nozzle and the cleaning solution is recovered from the surface with suction and deposited into a recovery tank includes, according to the invention, the steps of admixing an oxidizing agent with the cleaning solution, and heating the admixture prior to the step of dispensing the cleaning solution onto the surface to be cleaned.
