    • A conscious sedation system and a response testing apparatus for a conscious sedation system. A controller generates a request for a predetermined finger movement response from a patient and analyses at least a finger movement response made by the patient to the request to determine a level of sedation of the patient. The response testing apparatus includes a request assembly and a response assembly. The request assembly communicates to the patient the request generated by the controller. The response assembly senses the finger movement response and communicates the finger movement response to the controller. The response testing apparatus includes a request assembly and a response assembly, wherein the request assembly and/or the response assembly is a finger touch response apparatus in one embodiment. In another embodiment the response testing apparatus includes a request assembly and a response assembly, wherein the request assembly and/or the response assembly is a handpiece sensor mechanism.

    • A surgical biopsy instrument for the extraction of at least one tissue sample from a body is described herein. The surgical biopsy instrument has a vacuum source and an outer elongated hollow piercing needle for the penetration of the body. The needle has a proximal end and a distal piercing tip opposite the proximal end. The needle also includes a needle passageway extending between the proximal end and the tip. The needle has a tissue receiving port adjacent to the piercing tip and the tissue receiving port communicates with the needle passageway for reception of the tissue sample. A cutter is moveably disposed relative with the needle. The cutter has a distal cutting blade on the distal end of the cutter. The cutting blade is moveable across the tissue receiving port of the needle to cut the tissue sample. A tissue extractor is connected to the vacuum source and the extractor is moveably disposed relative to the needle. The tissue extractor has a tissue receptacle and an extractor channel extending therethrough. The tissue receptacle communicates with the extractor channel and the tissue receptacle is alignable with the tissue receiving port of the piercing needle for the reception of the tissue sample upon an application of a vacuum from the vacuum source. The tissue extractor is removable from the needle of the surgical biopsy instrument for the extraction of the tissue sample from the body.

The tissue receptacle is removable from the needle of the surgical biopsy instrument for the extraction of the tissue sample from the body.

    • A method and apparatus are provided for assessing the degree of electrical signal blockage, or transmurality, of a line of ablation in which at least a first electrode adapted to deliver an electrical impulse is located on the first or one side of a line of ablation; and at least a second and a third electrode adapted to detect an electrical impulse are located on the second side of the line of ablation generally opposite to the first electrode. Each electrode may also be made up of more than one electrode, such as an electrode pair, to better assure reliability and tissue contact. Once the electrodes are located in contact with the tissue in question, an electrical impulse is delivered to the target tissue by the first electrode and detected by the second and third electrodes. Depending upon whether the line of ablation allows passage of electrical pulses, the second and third electrodes will detect the electrical impulse sequentially, with the order and/or timing of detection depending upon whether the electrical signal is able to directly cross the line of ablation or has to travel around the line of ablation to reach the second and third electrodes.

    • A handheld biopsy device is provided for the collection of soft tissue samples from a surgical patient. In a preferred embodiment, the biopsy device comprises a handpiece, a fluid collection system, and a power transmission source. The handpiece is configured for grasping by a single hand, and being independentyl manipulatable by hand for movement of the instrument toward and away from the patient. An elongated piercer extends from the distal end of the handpiece. The piercer has a sharpened distal end for entering the tissue and a port located proximal to the sharpened distal end for receiving a portion of tissue mass. An elongated cutter is disposed coaxially relative to a piercer lumen of the piercer. A distal blade of the cutter slides distally past the port of the piercer to severe the tissue portion drawn into the port by vacuum. The cutter is retracted to a most proximal position for removal of the tissue portion from a cutter lumen of the cutter. The handpiece further comprises a holster for detachably connecting a cutter rotational transmission and a cutter axial transmission to the power transmission source.
