[Class 29.] In apparatus having the generator 10, Fig. 1, divided into upper and lower chambers 31, 30, the lower chamber is constructed so that the walls bounding the gas space are never submitted to direct heating action from the gas, oil or like burner 52. The lower chamber 30 is in the form of a jacket around the wall 27 of the large combustion chamber, which wall may be a continuation of the outer cylindrical wall of the upper chamber, while the flue 28 extends centrally through the upper chamber. One or more lift pipes 32, 33 extending from the lower to the upper chamber have the perforations at their lower ends located so that the liquid level never falls far enough to expose the gas formed in the lower chamber to the directly heated wall surface. The perforations may be at different levels in the several pipes. The apparatus includes an absorber 14, evaporator 13 and condenser 12 arranged in known manner. The lift pipe may extend from a rising side branch of the lower chamber of a generator having a central flue of uniform bore, or, as shown in Fig 5, it may extend from a separate vessel 42 connected by pipes 43, 44 with the lower chamber. In a generator having an external heat insulated flue, as shown in Fig. 9, the lower chamber is vented to the upper chamber by a pipe 53, and the lift pipe 56 is fitted with a bell or inverted cup 54 in which the gas collects above the perforation. Alternatively the partition dividing the generator into two parts is of bell shape, with the perforations of the lift pipe above the level of the rim of the bell.
