    • A display in which images can be selectively presented to a viewer, is formed by providing a transparent substrate; forming a transparent, electrically conductive coating over the transparent substrate; forming a light modulating layer including liquid crystal material in a polymer binder over the transparent, electrically conductive layer; forming by directly depositing conductive material in an image wise pattern over the light modulating layer to provide viewable and conductive images, the light modulating layer being effective in a first condition to prevent the viewing of the viewable and conductive images and in a second condition to permit the viewing of the viewable and conductive images. Electrical connection is made so that an electrical field can be applied across selected ones of such viewable and conductive images and the transparent, electrically conductive layer to cause the light modulating layer underlying the selected ones of the viewable and conductive images to change from the first condition to the second condition so as to present such viewable and conductive images for viewing to the viewer.

    • The invention relates to a patternable coatable electrically conductive layer comprising a fluid-coated electrically conductive material, wherein the fluid-coated electrically conductive material has sufficient conductivity to induce an electric field strong enough to change the optical state of a light modulating material and a display comprising a substrate, at least one patternable coatable electrically conductive layer comprising a fluid-coated electrically conductive material, wherein said fluid coated electrically conductive material has sufficient conductivity to induce an electric field strong enough to change the optical state of a light modulating material which has a first and a second field-switched stable optical state, and an imaging layer comprising said light modulating material disposed over said at least one patternable fluid-coated electrically conductive layer. The invention also relates to a method for making a coatable electrically conductive layer and a method for making a display with a coatable electrically conductive layer.

    • A display having polymer dispersed liquid crystals, which display comprises a transparent substrate; a layer comprising polymer-dispersed cholesteric liquid crystal disposed over the substrate, which layer has more than one stable optical state in the absence of an electrical field. The display further comprises a first transparent conductor disposed between the state changing layer and the transparent support, a second conductor on the other side of the state changing layer so that when a field is applied between the first and second conductors, the liquid crystals change state. It has been found advantageous to have a non-conductive, non-field spreading dark layer of sub-micron pigments in a binder for providing an improved light absorbing function, which dark layer is disposed between the layer of polymer-dispersed cholesteric liquid crystal and the second conductor.

    • A display for presenting selected images to a viewer is disclosed, including a transparent substrate, a transparent, electrically conductive coating formed over the transparent substrate, a light modulating layer formed over the transparent, electrically conductive layer and a photosensitive layer formed over the light modulating layer which is adapted to be exposed and developed to provide viewable and conductive images.
