    • A hybrid head to record and reproduce high density data. The hybrid head to record and reproduce data includes an element to record and reproduce data which is formed at the back side of a slider. The element to record and reproduce data includes an energy source to supply energy required to heat a predetermined region of a recording medium to be data-recorded, a magnetic field applier to apply a magnetic field to the predetermined region of the recording medium heated by the energy supplied from the energy source, a data reproducer to reproduce data from the recording medium, a channel to allow the magnetic field supplier to transmit the energy supplied from the energy source to the predetermined region of the recording medium, a heat shield element to prevent heat from being transmitted from the channel to other elements around the channel, a write pole covering the heat shield element, and a magnetic field generator to generate a magnetic field to the write pole. With this design, it is possible to prevent or minimize heat generated by a channel to transmit energy from being transmitted to other elements installed around the channel. In addition, it is possible to prevent the characteristics of the other elements around the channel from being changed due to the heat generated by the channel.

    • An optical pickup device including a slider on which an objective lens is mounted and which is elastically movably supported by a support member, an air bearing member provided in the slider so that a lifting force pushes the slider away from the disk according to air flow generated during rotation of the disc, and an actuator to change the position of the objective lens mounted on the slider in a focus direction relative to the disc. In the optical pickup device, the slider is lifted from a disk using a lifting force acting on the air bearing member and simultaneously the position of an objective lens is adjusted by a piezoelectric device to perform focus control. Therefore, collision between a disk and an objective lens is avoided, and a focal position is effectively controlled just by changing only the position of the objective lens, thereby increasing the reliability of a recording and/or reproducing operation.

    • An actuator of a disc drive having a shock damping device includes an electro-magnet disposed on a cover of the disc drive, a magnetic material disposed on a load beam of the actuator, opposite to the electro-magnet, and a driving control portion controlling a driving of the electro-magnet by detecting an vibration of the load beam towards and away from an optical disc that is caused by an external shock. When the load beam is vibrated by the external vibration or shock to the disc drive, electricity is supplied to the electro-magnet, securing the load beam to the cover until the vibration ceases. Accordingly, even when there is external vibration or shock applied to the disc drive, possible damage to the disc or the actuator can be minimized or prevented.
