The communicating may involve devices and includes receiving a first video bitstream with the 3D video encoded in a first format, receiving the associated metadata. The communicating also includes forming a protocol message, utilizing a processor, including the associated metadata. The communicating also includes transmitting a second video bitstream with the 3D video encoded in a second format and transmitting the protocol message separate from the second video bitstream. The protocol message includes data fields holding processing data, based on the associated metadata, describing the rendering of the 3D video. The processing data is operable to be read and utilized to direct a client device to process the 3D video extracted from a video bitstream and present the 3D video on a display. Also, there is a processing of the 3D video. The processing utilizes the protocol message.

    • A caption formatting method and computing system that receives an input video stream that includes a sequence of input transport stream packets. The method locates user data in the sequence of input transport stream packets, where the user data includes input caption data compliant with an input caption data format. The method extracts EIA-608 captions and EIA-708 captions from the input caption data, and formats the EIA-608 captions as caption data compliant with SCTE-20 format. The method creates a sequence of output transport stream packets based on the sequence of input transport stream packets, where the sequence of output transport stream packets include the caption data compliant with SCTE-20 format and the input caption data. The method sends an output video stream from the computing device, where the output video stream includes the sequence of output transport stream packets.

    • A 3D “pop-up” message is presented to users on a 3D television screen. The 3D message is formatted in such a way that it can be combined, in a post-production environment, with 3D video content. A “message mediator” receives both 3D video content and the 3D message. It also receives information from the 3D content provider about where and when within the 3D content to display the 3D message. The message mediator uses this information to combine the 3D message with the 3D video content and displays the result to the user. Any type of 3D message can be presented including advertisements, personal messages, public-service messages, reminders, and social-networking updates. Some 3D messages can be interactive, responding to user actions. The message mediator can set the transparency and depth of the 3D message to make it more compelling (the 3D message “pops out”) or less intrusive.

    • There is an encoding of three dimensional (3D) information. The encoding may include receiving a signal including frames in a 3D video sequence, receiving caption information to appear in a caption window associated with the frames, and/or receiving disparity information associated with the frames. The encoding may also include determining frame disparity maps based on the disparity information associated with the frames. The frame disparity maps may be determined by dividing a part of a frame into a plurality of grid cells. The grid cells may define a disparity measure associated with locations in a grid. The grid cells may form a caption window disparity map dividable into equivalent size portions including an equivalent amount of grid cells. The encoding may also include encoding the frames, the caption information and the frame disparity maps. There is also a decoding of the 3D information.
