    • An LED light engine comprising a high thermal conductivity substrate (e.g., a metal-clad PCB), a plurality of light-emitting-diode (LED) semiconductor devices mechanically connected to the substrate, an outer dike fixed to the substrate and surrounding at least a portion of the LED devices, and a substantially transparent polymeric encapsulant (e.g., optical-grade silicone) disposed on the plurality of LED devices and restrained by said outer dike. In one embodiment, the light engine includes a reflector (e.g., a generally conic reflector) fixed to the substrate to form the outer dike. In another embodiment, an optical component (e.g., a lens, filter, or the like) is optically coupled to the polymeric encapsulant disposed on the LED devices.

The removable trim has a flange, recessed portion, and mounting rim. The recessed portion has a depth to reduce glare. The removable trim is formed using a stamping or die casting process. A screw is used to mount the removable trim to the light fixture. The light fixture and removable trim are mounted to a recessed can housing using a clip or spring.

    • An LED lamp includes a light engine. The light engine includes a substrate including a transparent or translucent thermally conductive material, a plurality of LED semiconductor devices mounted to the substrate, a plurality of conductive traces formed over the substrate to electrically interconnect each of the plurality of LED semiconductor devices, and conductive leads connected to the substrate for supplying electrical energy to the plurality of LED semiconductor devices. The substrate of the light engine may include an aluminum nitride (AlN), or diamond film material. A thermally conductive rod is connected to the light engine. A heatsink is formed by an extrusion or die casting process. The heatsink includes a fin structure for dissipating heat energy into the environment. The thermally conductive rod and the heatsink are thermally connected. An optional optical envelope is mounted to the heatsink. The optional optical envelope is disposed over the light engine.

    • An LED light system has an LED light module for inserting into a standard fixture. The fixture has a housing and cover for sealing the enclosure. The LED module contains a shell or outer surface having a matching form factor as the housing for making physical contact with the housing over a sufficient surface area to provide good thermal contact. A substrate is mounted on a support structure. A plurality of LEDs is disposed on the substrate. A heat transfer agent or medium transfers heat from the LEDs to the housing. The outer surface of the LED module spreads the heat over its surface area and firmly contacts the surface of the housing for good thermal transfer. The heat transfer medium is made of a thermally conductive material such as aluminum or copper and formed to contact a surface area of the LED module.
