    • A detonator bar has an outer housing, an inner housing connected to the outer housing by at least one first frangible member, an explosive charge disposed in the inner housing, and a firing piston with firing pin held in the inner housing by at least one retaining dog and at least one second frangible member. Operation occurs in response to a relatively small impact force between the detonator bar and a perforator or other explosive object located in a subterranean well. This relatively small impact breaks the at least one first frangible member. Thereafter, a fluid pressure existing in the subterranean well, such as a hydrostatic pressure within a tubing string on which a perforator is conveyed, is used to exert a sufficient force to break the at least one second frangible member after the at least one retaining dog has been released by downward movement of the outer housing relative to the inner housing, which relative movement occurs only after the initial impact force has broken the at least one first frangible member.

    • An actuating tool which is conveyed into a tubing string to attach to portions of an emplaced perforating gun. The tool includes an actuator with an electronic delay timer and an explosive device. The tool attaches to an emplaced perforating gun and detonates it by initiating an explosive charge along a complete explosive pathway formed between the actuator and gun, the actuator includes a tandem piston arrangement functional at most existing hydrostatic pressure levels, but nonfunctional at or near the surface of the wellbore. The tool may be withdrawn from the tubing string for a backup detonation tool to be placed into the tubing string to detonate a secondary firing head.

    • Methods of perforating a well using coiled tubing conveyed perforating guns are disclosed. A perforating tool string includes a coiled tubing string, a perforating gun, a releasable gun hanger, and a pressure responsive release connecting the coiled tubing string to the perforating gun. The perforating tool string is lowered into place within the well and then the gun hanger is actuated by reciprocating motion of the coiled tubing string without rotating the coiled tubing string, thereby setting the gun hanger in the casing. Fluid pressure is then increased in the coiled tubing string to actuate the pressure responsive release to release the coiled tubing string from the perforating gun. The coiled tubing string and pressure responsive connector may then be retrieved from the well prior to firing the perforating gun. The perforating gun is subsequently fired by a pressure responsive firing head to perforate the well casing, and the perforating gun then automatically drops to the bottom of the well casing.

    • A method and apparatus for perforating oil well casing in a well bore, with particular advantage in highly deviated well bores. The perforating guns are run into the well bore using the production tubing. A sliding sleeve is connected in the tubing above the guns and a packer is run in for setting above the sliding sleeve and guns. The assembly is run into the well bore until the guns extend into the highly deviated portion of the bore where the well casing is to be perforated. The packer is set into place, isolating that portion of the well bore below the packer from that portion above the packer, and the sliding sleeve is opened using a wireline or other means. The well bore below the packer is pressurized through the tubing to ensure that the packer is properly set. The pressure is then allowed to bleed off and the sliding sleeve is closed. The guns use a differential pressure-actuated firing head which is actuated upon a predetermined differential pressure between the production tubing bore and the annulus between the tubing and the casing. The invention provides the capability of perforating well casing using relatively low values of actuating pressure, providing greater control over performating conditions such as underbalance.
