摘要： A fiber optic dust cap assembly for protecting fiber optic components is provided. The protected fiber optic components may include fiber optic adapters and fiber optic connectors. The fiber optic dust cap assembly includes a plurality of dust caps each coupled to a lanyard. Each of the plurality of dust caps is configured for insertion into a fiber optic component. The lanyard is configured to facilitate management of the dust caps. The lanyard is also configured to facilitate removal of the dust caps from the fiber optic components. Each of the dust caps among the plurality of dust caps may be removed by pulling on the lanyard. The lanyard may also facilitate removal of each of the plurality of dust caps in one pulling action. Additionally, by the plurality of dust caps being connected to the lanyard, the plurality of dust caps coupled to the lanyard remain together after removal.

The connector includes a ferrule, where an optical fiber extends through the ferrule and to the end face of the connector. An end of the optical fiber is polished proximate to the end face. The cover is bonded directly to the end face of the connector, and overlays the polished end of the optical fiber such that the cover protects the optical fiber, limits access of dust to the end face of the connector, and draws loose particulates from the end face upon removal of the cover.

Each optical fiber has an associated minimum bending radius RMIN and includes a bending radius RF such that RMIN≦RF≦RMAX, wherein at least one of the one or more optical fibers has RF=RMIN. The first and second connector ends are respectively located at or near the first and second ferrule ends and operably support the first and second optical fiber ends. The connector ends are each adapted to provide an external optical interconnection to an external device such as a circuit board.

The method also includes moving the fiber optic cable relative to the focused laser beam in a direction substantially along a central axis (AC) to form a substantially axially oriented groove (250) in the protective cover, wherein the groove does not reach one or more optical fibers (110) carried by the cable. The method can further include opening the protective cover at the groove to form a split protective cover portion (114S), and removing the split protective cover portion from the fiber optic cable. Methods of stripping a cable by forming two grooves in the protective cover using two focused laser beams are also disclosed.

摘要： The present invention provides a method of manufacture that minimizes the lateral offset of a plurality of optical fiber holes associated with a multi-fiber ferrule, including: determining an initial offset distance of each of the plurality of optical fiber holes from each of a plurality of corresponding target locations on an initial endface; removing a predetermined amount of material from the multi-fiber ferrule to form a subsequent endface; determining a subsequent offset distance of each of the plurality of optical fiber holes from each of the plurality of corresponding target locations on the subsequent endface; and, using the initial offset distance and the subsequent offset distance, determining an angle of each of the plurality of optical fiber holes relative to the initial endface. The method of manufacture also includes, using the angle, determining an optimal amount of material that is removed from the multi-fiber ferrule in order to minimize the offset distance of the plurality of optical fiber holes from the plurality of corresponding target locations. The method of manufacture further includes, using the optimal amount of material, removing this amount of material from another similarly-situated multi-fiber ferrule.
