    • A method and apparatus for forming an airlaid fibrous web on a moving surface can include a contoured foraminous member (62) having a first side portion (66), a laterally opposed second side portion (68), and a depth contour. A longitudinally extending, first side-masking member (52) can be located superjacent the first side portion (66) of the foraminous member (62), and can have a first inboard side wall surface (70). At least a second, separately provided, longitudinally extending, side-masking member (53) can be located superjacent the second side portion (68) of the foraminous member (62), and can have a second inboard side wall surface (72). Either or both of the first and second side-masking members (52, 54) are at least laterally movable relative to the foraminous member (62). A releasable attachment system (74) can selectively hold at least the first side-masking member (52) at a substantially fixed position relative to the foraminous member (62).

    • In an absorbent structure for an absorbent article, a non-woven absorbent core extends from one longitudinal end region of the absorbent structure through a central region thereof to an opposite longitudinal end region of the absorbent structure. The absorbent core has a first face, a second face opposite the first face, and laterally opposite side edges. A liquid permeable wrapsheet is wrapped about the first face, the laterally opposite side edges and at least a portion of the second face of the absorbent core to define a wrapped configuration of the wrapsheet. Tbe wrapsheet is constructed of a non-woven material and is secured in its wrapped configuration about the absorbent core at at least one securement region having a length substantially less than the length of the absorbent structure.

    • An apparatus and method for manufacturing a pad wherein a rotatable forming screen which has a generally cylindrical surface and at least one outwardly projecting nob is employed. The nob is positioned on the forming screen whereby the nob is circumscribed by the material, e.g., cellulosic fluff, deposited on the forming screen to form the pad. The pad is transferred from the forming screen to a moveable transfer surface. The transfer surface may be either flat or round and moves at a velocity which is at least as great as the velocity of the forming screen. The nob located on the forming screen includes a thrust surface disposed on a trailing edge of the nob. The thrust surface imparts a compressive force on the pad during the release of the pad from the forming screen. The compressive force is at least partially directed towards the transfer surface and thereby assists in the release and transfer of the pad. A vacuum may also be used to attract the pad to the transfer surface. When the transfer surface is a cylindrical surface, the forming screen may have a diameter which is smaller than, substantially equivalent to, or greater than the diameter of the transfer surface. The nobs disposed on the forming screen can have many different shapes and, for example, may define a frustum. The sidewalls of the nob may taper inwardly by about 5 degrees. Threaded fasteners may be utilized to make the nobs reattachable and exchangeable.
