In an embodiment, an electronic device is operable to identify it's location depending on the combination of base stations it receives signals from. Different geographic regions are defined and can be identified and renamed by the user based on the unique combination of base station ID's receivable in each geographic location. The embodiment described herein allows user handsets to continuously track location as they move. Applications in the electronic device can then be configured to respond in different manners depending on the location of the electronic device.

摘要： The need for a caller to construct and enter the unique, lengthy, dialing sequences for any one of a plurality of service providers for dialed calls from a handheld electronic device is eliminated by providing in the device a database containing the required dialing sequences. The caller need only select the contact to be called, a specific contact telephone number, if more than one is available, and a service provider to be used. The selected contact telephone number is automatically inserted into the appropriate dialing sequence and the call is initiated. Where a service provider has multiple access numbers, the most appropriate for the caller's location can be selected. If no service provider is chosen, a default dialing sequence is used.
