    • A bedside table has a base with a vertical tube thereon, a tabletop with a vertical member slidably disposed in the tube, and a locking mechanism which can releasably lock the tube and vertical member against relative movement. The locking mechanism includes a vertical locking surface within the tube, a first positioning surface on the vertical support which faces the locking surface, second and third vertically spaced positioning surfaces facing each other at a location between the first positioning surface and the locking surface, and a plate-like locking member having a first edge portion disposed against the first positioning surface and extending away from the first positioning surface between the second and third positioning surfaces in a direction toward the locking surface, the locking member being pivotal about a horizontal axis in the region of the first positioning surface between locking and release positions in which a second edge portion thereof respectively engages and is spaced from the locking surface. A single spring can be used to both counterbalance the weight of the tabletop and vertical member and yieldably urge the locking member toward its locking position.

    • An adjustable table includes a base having an upright post with two vertical rows of openings therein. A tubular member is telescopically slidably supported on the post and has a downwardly facing bearing surface adjacent each row of openings in the post. A vertical lever is supported on the tubular member for pivotal movement about a horizontal axis, the pivotal support having a degree of vertical play, and has two locking members thereon each engageable with the openings in a respective row thereof and with a respective bearing surface on the lever. A table top is pivotally supported on the upper end of the tubular member for movement about a substantially horizontal axis and first locking means is fixably mounted on the tubular member. A leaf spring has one end fixedly secured to the undersurface of the table top and has second locking means thereon at a location spaced from the one end, the second locking means being movable between positions engaging and spaced from the first locking means by flexing the leaf spring. A selectively actuable disabling mechanism can render the leaf spring inoperative when the first and second locking means are engaged.

A locking plate spring is mounted to the one frame member for biasing the locking plate to the one position.

    • A vertically adjustable table includes a base having an upright rectangular tube, a square post slidably received within the tube, and a table top supported at the upper end of the post. The post slidably engages one of the narrow walls of the tube and a horizontal slot is provided near the top of the opposite narrow wall thereof. An integral locking member made from a bent metal plate is generally U-shaped, has a bight located near the upper end of the second wall of the tube and has two legs which diverge downwardly. One leg extends into a space between the tube and post, has a semicylindrical inward bend near the lower end thereof which is of a diameter slightly greater than the space between the post and tube, and has an elongate tab at the outer end thereof which is loosely received in the slot in the tube. Limited pivotal movement of the locking member is possible about a horizontal axis defined by the cooperating tab and slot, a cam surface in the region of the semicylindrical bend being thereby moved into and out of engagement with the post. A spring urges the locking member to pivot in a direction moving the cam surface into engagement with the post.

    • A universal bed rail mount for securing bedside rail risers to a mattress supporting bed frame is disclosed. The mount comprises an L-shaped support for embracing the bed frame and is formed of two legs having an opening at an outer portion of each of the legs. The mount also includes at least one tension plate having a hole at a central portion thereof and having bearing surfaces at each of opposite ends of the plate. The bearing surfaces are adapted to be received in the openings in the outer portion of each of the legs. A bolt is received in the tension plate and is adapted to abut the bed frame embraced by the L-shaped support. An adjustable mechanical advantage element is on the bolt and on the tension plate to selectively adjust the position of the bolt in the hole in the tension plate and thereby adjust the tension between the L-shaped support and the tension plate with the bed frame therebetween. A riser guide support is affixed to an exterior surface of one of the legs.
