Particulate matter is trapped in the walls of the filter and the catalytic material removes gases, such as nitrogen oxides (NOx), from gases passing through the filter. The filter, in one embodiment, is adaptable for use with internal combustion (gas and diesel) engines. A method of making the filter is also described.

The selected pore forming materials are homogeneous wax/non-ionic surfactant particles formed by a prilling process in which the wax is melted and the non-ionic surfactant is mixed into the wax prior to prilling. The disclosure is useful in the manufacture porous ceramic honeycomb bodies including ceramic honeycomb filter traps.

The method can further include inserting at least one plunger and a biasing device into a shell cavity so that a tail of the plunger is slidably received in the shell cavity and the biasing device biases a tip of the plunger away from an internal surface of the shell cavity.
