    • A lighting system is disclosed, including a first lighting module and a second lighting module connected parallel to the first lighting module. The first lighting module, with a first activation voltage, generates light at a first color temperature and the second lighting module, with a second activation voltage, generates light at a second color temperature. The two lighting modules generate light when current flows through them. When input voltage is changed, both the amount of current flowing through the two modules changes and the ratio of current flowing through the two lighting modules changes. The change in ratio changes the color temperature of the light produced by the lighting system resulting from combination of the light produced by the two modules. The combined output brightness and color temperature each change with applied power in such a way to emulate the lighting profile of an incandescent lamp.

    • A shut-down circuit configured for use with an electronic ballast coupled to a lamp in a control path includes a device for sensing the electrical energy associated with the control path, and a sensing circuit for shutting down the ballast in the event that the energy does not conform to a predetermined condition. The sensed energy may be current indicative of lamp installation or short circuit, or voltage indicative of arcing or open circuit. The device for sensing the electrical energy associated with the control path may be an isolation transformer, or alternative devices such as optical isolators may be employed. The circuitry may further include electronic componentry to disable the sensing circuit during initial energization of the lamp. In one disclosed example, the sensing circuit includes a node that should be at or near a predetermined electrical potential when the lamp is operating properly, and a switch such as a Schmitt trigger coupled to the node that turns on or off to shut down the ballast if the node is not at or near the predetermined electrical potential. In an implementation used to detect voltage fluctuations indicative of arcing, the circuitry may include a high-pass filter or differentiator and detector to detect high-frequency noise. Alternatively, a phase-locked loop may be coupled to a low-pass filter to detect high-frequency noise indicative of arcing. In another alternative implementation, a microprocessor performing a digital signal processing algorithm may determine the presence of an abnormal condition.

    • An anti-log power amplifier for energizing a reversible electric motor of an electrically assisted power steering system for an automotive vehicle. The power amplifier has a preamplifier which amplifies the output signal of a torque sensor detecting the torque applied to the vehicle's steering wheel, an anti-log signal generator exponentially modifying the amplified output signal, a pulse width modulator converting the exponentially modified signal to a pair of complementary pulse width signals, and a pair of bridged power amplifiers for energizing the reversible electric motor in response to the complementary pulse width signal. The bridged power amplifiers are further responsive to the exponentially modified signal for increasing the electrical power delivered to the reversible electric motor under high torque loads.

    • A fiber optic display sign is provided comprising a plurality of magnetically actuatable indicator elements, each having associated therewith at least two fiber optic cables for transmitting light. Each of the fiber optic cables has an end face for emitting light which terminates in an indicator element, and an end face for receiving light which is positioned in close proximity with the other light receiving end faces to form a light receiving surface. A light source assembly moveable with respect to the light receiving surface includes a primary light source and a secondary light source each adapted to illuminate the light receiving surface when aligned therewith. The light source assembly is alternatively moveable to a first position at which the primary light source is aligned with the light receiving surface or a second position at which the secondary light source is aligned with the light receiving surface. An electronic circuit detects an interruption in the current through the primary light source and provides an electrical signal in response thereto. A solenoid responds to the electrical signal by moving the light source assembly from the first position to the second position and energizing the secondary light source.
