    • The invention is directed to a data collection and evaluation system that includes a telematics device for collecting, time-stamping, and storing vehicle sensor data. Examples of the type of data collected include door data, ignition data, speed data, global positioning data, and diagnostic and trouble code data. The system further includes an external data acquisition device, such as a mainframe computer system or a hand-held computing device like an iPAQ. The external data acquisition device is configured to communicate with the telematics device over a wireless network, which enables the telematics device to transmit the time-stamped data to the external data acquisition device and receive information and instructions from the external data acquisition device. The ability of the system to automatically collect and transfer data and communicate with an external data acquisition device allows for the automation of fleet management processes, vehicle maintenance and repair processes, and certain security features.

    • The invention involves reading RFID transponders affixed to items by rotating the items as they are exposed to an RFID reader as may be incorporated in a normal processing, manufacturing or shipping process such as wrapping items in a protective membrane using a system that includes a commercially-available pallet wrapper adapted to be controlled by computer, and with an RFID transponder reading device mounted to the carriage device of the pallet wrapper. The computer interfaces with a programmable logic controller that controls the pallet wrapper and the RFID reader. The computer causes a predetermined number of wraps of the shipping membrane to be wrapped around a portion of items and the pallet to secure the items to the pallet. The RFID tags on the items on the pallet are read as the items rotate near the fixed RFID reader that is mounted to a carriage holding the shipping membrane.

    • The present invention is generally directed to a tracking and visibility system of a kind that augments aspects of traditional tracking systems by implementing mechanisms for independently detecting and verifying the whereabouts of particular objects moving through a carrier's logistics network. These mechanisms are preferably implemented without having to alter the outward appearance or manner in which such objects would otherwise be shipped. At a high level, the present invention accomplishes this by providing a comprehensive tracking system that includes at least two levels of tracking, one of which involves physically associating a wireless device with an object to be tracked, the wireless device being configured to transmit a signal that can be used to independently detect and verify the location of the particular object as it moves through the carrier's logistics network.

    • A method of joining plates includes the steps of providing a one or more studs having a head, a barrel and a weld tip. The plates and studs are arranged such that a first plate having at least one hole is located between the studs and a second plate with each stud aligned with a hole and contacting the second plate. Current is passed through the stud using the stud head and the second plate as electrodes to melt the weld tip bonding the stud to the second plate. The studs are arranged such that an air gap between the studs and the first plate prevents arcing during the welding step. Pressure and heat may be applied to compress the barrel such that the stud functions as a rivet. Alternatively, the barrel may remain uncompressed to provide a pin allowing relative rotation between the plates.
