摘要： The present invention provides an RF tag having an antenna that can be selectively tuned to achieve optimal performance. The RF tag comprises an RF transponder integrated circuit and an antenna connected to the RF transponder integrated circuit. The antenna includes components such as tuning stubs and loading bars that are physically alterable to selectively vary the performance characteristics of the antenna. The tuning stub and loading bar may each further comprising a variably selectable length having elements that may be removed by punching, cutting, etching, laser trimming or other process. The antenna may further comprise a leadframe or a flexible substrate.

摘要： A diode modulator which is not part of the rectifier power supply circuit of an RF Transponder is controlled by the transponder electronic logic and memory circuitry to conduct RF current from a second terminal to a first terminal of the RF Transponder antenna in a first state of the transponder electronic circuitry, and does not conduct appreciable current in a second state of the transponder electronic circuitry, thereby changing the loading of the RF Transponder antenna between the first state and the second state of the transponder electronic circuitry, and thereby changing the intensity of the RF radiation backscattered from the RF Tag. The present invention has further advantages that the same diode used as a modulator can also be used in the transponder receiver circuit.

The tag, a chip-based tag, includes an antenna and a chip in communication with the antenna. The chip includes circuitry including field effect transistors that can modify the effective reading range of the tag by modifying characteristics of the tag including the modulation depth of the backscatter signal, the impedance characteristics of the tag front end electronics, the power consumption characteristics and the threshold power-on voltage of the tag. These characteristics are change either temporarily or permanently in response to commands communicated to the tag from a radio frequency identification reader.
