    • The present invention is directed towards systems and methods for using community annotations to content items as anchortext for search and index purposes. The method according to one embodiment comprises generating one or more items of personalized information by a user for storage in a user profile, the one or more items of personalized information associated with one or more content items, the one or more content items and the one or more items of personalized information comprising one or more words. One or more items of personalized information is selected from a given user profile. The method further comprises indexing the one or more words in the one or more content items and the one or more words in the selected personalized information into an index, identifying one or more content items responsive to on or more query words in a query of the index and returning the identified content items as a result set to the user.

    • Access control systems and methods regulate access to shared content items in a corpus using visibility tokens. A user provides other users with access to a content item by associating a content token with the content item and associating a matching user token with each user who is to be granted access. A user who attempts to access the content item succeeds only if that user has a user token matching the content token associated with the content item. User tokens can be propagated automatically from one user to another, e.g., based on trust relationships among the users. Content tokens can be indexed with content items so that when a user searches the corpus, a search engine can detect matches between user tokens and content tokens and filter the search results based on whether they are visible to the querying user.

    • Techniques are provided which improve deal and advertisement targeting of users. Methods and systems may detect if an email contains deal information related to one or more deals. If an email contains deal information, the deal information may be extracted. If the user clicks on a link in the email, one or more additional deals which may be similar or related to the one or more deals received in the email may be selected based at least in part on the extracted deal information. The additional deals and/or advertisements related to the additional deals may be targeted to the user via email or via the user's browser application.

    • Techniques are provided which improve deal and advertisement targeting of users, and which may include facilitating user comparison of deals. Methods and systems may detect if an email contains deal information related to one or more deals. If an email contains deal information, the deal information may be extracted. When the email is opened by the user, a link may be displayed on top of (e.g., overlaid on) the email. The link may be configured such that clicking on the link transmits a search query comprising the extracted deal information to a deal service. The deal service may retrieve one or more additional deals which may be similar or related to the one or more deals received in the email. The additional deals may be selected by the deal service based at least in part on the extracted deal information.
